But what makes a COTY winner?

I don't know why they single out this single car and cause the drama every year.

Why not split it into a price based COTY per bracket?

<100k
100-200k
200-500k

etc.

:D :D :D :D at the Coty comments

Wasn't the driver asleep on the back seat during the epic intercity journey?

Oh ja, with the aircon on.

Covering their bases before they make another Porsche a winner... ;)

So! I called it correctly - surprise surprise....Not!

I am SO SICK of these idiots blindly voting for Porsche every year - I honestly think that the Motor Manufacturers should Boycott this farce of a road show until they sort out some parameters that suit the man in the street.

Year after year, Porsche wins, and nobody says a thing - how can it be car of the Year, if it can only be bought by about 0.32% of the bloody population!!?

The Delta Motor Corporation of South Africa Opel Monza 160i GSi Car of the Year 1991 does not break down, it merely pauses for indeterminate periods of time in order to let people behold it.

:D:D:D

I agree - here is a quote from a Motoring Journalist who is a friend of mine - I think he puts it very well

3 years in a row? I know the new generation of Porsche's are great, but against cars like the W205 C-Class, M4, Renault Duster and Audi A3 Sedan.... its competitors in the SA COTY, it doesnt exactly move the game forward enough. It is based on the Audi Q5 which in itself is a great vehicle, but for Porsche to win 3 years in a row - in the South African market is total and utter. One journo remarked that Toby Venter is "buying" the Guild, because for a 3 in row in just damn near impossible. Another remarked that the Guild has already announced the 2016 COTY and its the Cayman GT4 and the 2017 COTY is the Boxster Spyder. This just further highlights that the COTY is only relevant to the motor industry in SA, and entirely irrelevant to the public. This is an absolute sham! Totally shocking! Makes me wonder why manufacturers even support the SAGMJ if this is their way they do things.

I can actually agree with the previous two winners. Haven't driven either admittedly but by all accounts, they're pretty incredible vehicles that win any comparitive shootouts comfortably, and for their segment offer fantastic value. Sure most of the public will never own one, but this competition isn't split per segment, it is what it is.
The Macan, yeah, that's a heck of surprise.

This is what Michele Lupini has to say about it - one of the most respected Motoring Journalists in the country:

Makes a mockery of my profession - also clearly shows how little this collective lot who call themselves the South African Guild of Motoring Journalists actually know about the subject at hand. But then of course none of Car, Top Gear, AutoWeek and Top Car - the four largest-circulating dedicated general motoring titles in SA - are represented in that three-ring CotY circus and if you look up the Jurors, you will notice that a good number of them do not even have jobs as journalists and why the handful there that could make a difference are outnumbered by a majority of make believe hackers...

And this:
One more tiny little point - this happens to be the SOUTH AFRICAN Car of the Year - not the William Nicoll Drive or Sandton or Camps Bay Coty, nor the Coté 'd Azur or Marine Drive or Hamptons CotY - it represents a public at large of which probably more than half has never even sat in a car, let alone a taxi. So yes, for something special to win once in a while - when that car is so exceptional that it really, really deserves it - then well and good. But for two two-seaters and now a million-buck SUV (that is an incredible car but it comes at a pretty hefty premium that should automatically count it out of the reckoning) from the same carmaker outscores the likes of a Toyota Corolla, Renault Duster, Audi A4 Sedan or a Merc C Class and cars such as a Yaris, Vivo, Polo, Mazda3, let alone that Datsun that was crucified by the same have-it-alls in its efforts to bring a really affordable new car to market, to name just a few are not even there, has to be called into question...

screw the monza, a challenger appoaches

this old girl was a 3rd car - kept for visitors to use when in cape town (refused to sell her as she was the most reliable car i ever owned)
eventually under relentless pressure i sold her - for almost nothing
she's a 1996 merc E280 with 320000km on the clock.

suck it up monza:
in december she went from ct to harare & back - (with aircon on) in the blazing african heat over zimbabwe's pothole highways without a hiccup.
