I think its finally come to the point where need to start a website where donations ...can be made in order to buy back telkom and put it back in the hands of the people that know something about the internet and communtications...in this country...

Worst case scenario hey we collect...the dividends at the end of each year and have one big party!

if 7000 forum members donate R100 = R700 000

great just a couple billion to go :)

Telkom's total market capatilisation is about R72 billion. Most of this is owned by institutional investors - so there is very little that we as a community could do with this type of approach.

Not to mention that if we start buying all the shares, the price will rocket into orbit...

Nice idea though. But rather donate the money to litigating Telkom's ass...

How about using the money to buy our own underseas cable and sell bandwidth to Telkom ($$$)

Legal fees

What about using the fees to have a legal battle with Telkom, and create some publicity. We can just be a generalnuisance to them.

You'll make headlines for a week then youll still have to sit with telkom lawyers for the next 10 years just to get them to finish appealing even if you won.

i like the idea though bout buying a bit of the new cable. The universities are going to be doing it so why not pipe in a bit he?

"Theoretically" if we had our own cable, would we still have to some overseas provider for MB's or what effectively would we be paying for besides the cable. And yes I know, it might be a bit of a "pipe" dream, no pun intended, just for interest sake.

Yes, but the wholesale per Gb charge from carriers like Sprint and Telia is a fraction of what Telkom is charging locally. Heck, even Sprint's RETAIL high speed bandwidth packages work out to a fraction of Telkom's per Gb cost.

To me the answer is for the Govt to re-nationalize Telkom ( Govt being the only one with the R35billion or so required to buy out the other shareholders ) and reconstitute it as a not-for-profit organization, then de-regulate the industry. Cut those executive salaries too.

Telkom to me is a prime example of capitalism gone haywire.

But elephants don't fly, and pigs like to keep their gravy-trough, so I am not getting hopeful.

Once you land in uk bandwidth is really not a problem ( I think the 10 000 volts required to power the fiber line and repeaters [source: alcatel] will cost more :D )

Kinda what I've been thinking. It's obscene to allow a monopoly to LIST, for Pete's sake!

Telkom is in no way an example of capitalism as it is still a state mandated monopoly. True capitalism would be more of a situation like the US and UK where there are literally dozens of carriers to choose from.

I stand corrected Garp - you are quite right I suppose. But SOMETHING has gone haywire.

Government should either

A) completely privatise Telkom as well as the SNO and give ICASA the power it needs
B) completely nationalise Telkom as well as the SNO and give ICASA the power it needs

I doubt either will ever happen, as Gov has seen the amount of $$$'s they get for doing nothing.
