To me the answer is for the Govt to re-nationalize Telkom ( Govt being the only one with the R35billion or so required to buy out the other shareholders ) and reconstitute it as a not-for-profit organization, then de-regulate the industry. Cut those executive salaries too.

You re absolutely right goverment caused this situation by sellin OUR telecoms company to a bunch of yanks. What they should of done is kept the infrastructure and issued liscences to companies and let them pay for the use of OUR infrstructure.

Actually i think goverment could still do this because as far as i know Telkom has renaged on their mandate to provide phone lines to the poor.

Forget Telkom.

We need to look at the SNO and overseas operators coming in and doing there thing.

This whole this about international bandwidth.
Forget about international bandwidth. Lets start by getting local bandwidth cheaper. If we can get local bandwidth cheaper, we can afford to host services locally and reduce the amount of international bandwidth..

I still believe we need to get local bw cheap. We should be able to run 100mbps fiber lines between points. I reckon that is step 1.

Once local is affordable, we can start sorting out international.
