Buying a 2nd Hand Car Privately

Can anybody confirm what exactly I need to have and get from the other party involved when I sell my existing car and buy another 2nd hand car?
 
Selling: Money, complete and sign change of ownership form.
Buying: If financing, the finance house should do everything otherwise seller needs to complete change of ownership form and give you some sort of invoice.
 
I just bought a second hand car so I might be able to provide some insight into the procedure.

As the seller: you need to get the yellow change of ownership form, you need to complete parts A and C and the buyer needs to complete (and sign) section B. This form acknowledges that both parties agree that the vehicle has been handed over to the buyer from the seller. The seller keeps the yellow form. You also need to give the buyer the vehicle's registration form - it looks similar to a license form but does not come with a disc and should have the owners name on it.

As the buyer: You need to complete part B of the change of ownership form, complete the blue form and take it along with the vehicle's license paper and proof of roadworthy to the traffic department.

Works both ways, I'm afraid. One of the joys of buying privately.

He should actually come with you to the bank. Confirm that the money is in the bank, then hand over all papers, Log Book and Transfer of Ownership, whilst still in the bank, then you both go outside, shake hands and gallop off into the sunset, whilst he catches a taxi. :D

ROFL, the problem is, the money is in my brothers bank account and the car is getting registered in my wife's name.... Don't ask why though. ;)
 
Okay, so I have to get the "Application for Registration and licensing of motor vehicle" form, signed by him and the vehicle registration form from him? Must he provide the roadworthy certificate?

I must pay him and then get the keys to the car from him, obviously with the car. :)

Take the forms to the licensing offices and register it on my wife's name. This can be done in our own time? Obviously not taking forever to do it.
 
Registration should be within 21 days of the original owner signing the yellow form. He should also get that form into the Lic Dept ASAP. In good faith you should also provide him with some sort of written agreement whereby you are liable for any fines accrued after taking delivery, and prior to going in to your name. Helps the seller sleep a little better after handing over the keys. :)

EDIT: Sorry, he must only provide you with a RWC if the car is sold with one, otherwise you take the car voetstoets and you have to get it through the test.

If you are the buyer then the seller doesn't have to sign any of your documents. You need to complete the blue form and hand it to the licensing office along with the vehicle's registration form that you have acquired from the seller. You will also need to have the car roadworthied before you can submit these forms. I think that either party can take the car for road worthy - what you need as the seller is proof that it has be issued with a roadworthy certificate.

As the buyer, you need to sign section B on his yellow change of ownership form. I think that the seller has 21 days to submit this form. As either party you should try submit your forms as soon as possible.

Hyperian as the new owner you HAVE to sign the blue form in order to get it into your name.

Sorry to be picky, but I do this several times a week.
 
Okay, so the change of ownership form he completes, section A and C and we have to complete section B and then he takes that form again, to submit it to the licensing offices.

We get the registration form from him and need a RWC, take it to the licensing office to register the car on our name.
 
The BUYER takes all the forms to the Lic Dept after you have both signed. Get a certified copy of his ID as well.

Easiest/fastest is to go in together.
