Your opinion doesn't correlate with others' findings here. Almost everyone with attention for detail who tests LCDs, Samsung/Sony vs LG, comments on LG's (IPS's) poorer black levels, in general. Obviously some LGs will beat Samsung/Sony, but the trend is otherwise. Wikipedia seems to confirm this.
Perhaps the other TV's have better black levels, and yes Wikipedia confirms this, but my point is I haven't really noticed it so it's probably not much of a problem,
And that the IPS panels have superior colour to the Sony/Samsung panels. Wikipedia confirms this too.
Agreed, it's unnecessary worrying about a few 0.0x CD/m of black difference or what ever for most people. If they're worrying about that they should at least have a dark room suited for HT.
Of course these aren't always truisms for every model, low end and high end, etc.
My point is that it's not as cut and dried as your original assertion that LG's IPS is the best.![]()
I found the picture on the Cinema 3D tv's to be rather grainy when viewing shop demo's like games and movies :/
Depends on your preference, you need to go test them both for yourself.
The LG uses passive 3D which is better for comfort (lighter glasses with no flickering or crosstalk) but only runs at half FHD resolution (1920x540 per eye).
(Samsung) Plasma uses active 3D which provides FHD 3D (1920x1080 if you have the appropriate model) but the glasses are expensive and heavy. Note for R8K its probably a PS51D490 which isn't FHD but rather HD-Ready (1366x768), you'd need to pay R10-11K for a FHD PS51D550.
Also all the above models are not what's referred to as 'smart' TVs (LG 47LW4500 doesn't even have an Ethernet port) so forget any type of 3D streaming off the Internet (you'll need some external device to do this).
Correction: LG cinema 3D is FULL HD - read their website and certification to be FULL HD and the only certified flicker-free 3D. Cheap Cinema glasses can be used and the 2D to 3D conversion I find to be really awesome, even if not 100% correct always such as showing paintings in 3D as well.

n particular, we wanted to check one of LG’s most unusual claims: That unlike the Vizio set, LG’s passive 3D TVs were capable of displaying true 1080p (1920x1080) resolution to each eye. That claim goes against our general understanding of the current passive polarization techniques, which typically cut vertical resolution in half. In 3D mode, these passive TVs essentially divide the display screen—and thus the 3D stereo image—into odd and even lines, each group having a different polarization. The matching polarization in the glasses then steers the odd lines to one eye and the even lines to the other eye, which means each eye only sees half the 1080-line vertical resolution (1920x540).
So how can LG claim 1080p resolution when each eye is forever blocked from seeing half the lines? For each single frame of incoming video, LG refreshes the image to each eye two times. For one eye, the first pass presents the odd lines of the 1080p image onto the odd line rows of the screen, followed by the even lines, which are also—and unusually—presented on the screen’s odd line rows (not on the even line rows).
While this method technically presents each eye with all the 1080p information, it does so by placing half the lines of video in the wrong row location, at odds with standard video processing practices. Since the odd and even line information is presented sequentially to each eye, but in the same line locations, at any given time each eye is still only seeing half the resolution. But we’ll reserve final judgment for our resolution tests, which are presented below.

We found that despite its claims, the LG LW5600 wasn’t able to produce true 1080p images to each eye in the 3D mode. The loss of resolution was apparent on our resolution test patterns, as well as on regular programming, where we saw course, jagged edges on objects that should have been smooth, and on broken lines that should have appeared continuous. It was especially visible on graphics and text, where we could see scan lines (see photo above). But on natural video (people, nature scenes), the lack of resolution and related artifacts were less apparent and never distracting.

Again if you go through the trouble to read about the technology that LG employs in their algorithm you will see that they alternate the half resolution displays to both eyes and your brain is duped to see the full resolution.
It is sometimes difficult to read in your arguments as you are the one selling the idea that HD ready is OK as you would not see the difference beyond X meters. LG implemented a algorithm that emulates the full HD to the viewers brain and now suddenly it's not OK?

With LG's specific algorithm that is even more of a reality.With passive your brain puts the two halves together to make it full 1080P.
