I have to say I am extremely impressed with the Honda build quality. Everything still works in this car. Not a single rattle. And the drive is SOLID. no play on the steering, smooth gear changes etc. Considering that she has 260k on the clock!

I started out looking at Toyotas, Hondas. I've since broaden the search to Almera's as they seem value for money with good reliablity. Looking for auto preferably as I commute in standstill traffic.

Look I get that not everyone looks after their cars, I don't really hold that against them. However, when you advertise a POS as Excellent Condition, that really works me up.

You need to go smaller and less popular for something that still looks decent.

I'm afraid that would be your Chev Spark, Tata Indica.
You might even get a Renault Sandero.

There is absolute JUNK out there. And I mean POS JUNK! I thought I was setting a decent budget, considering what I got on trade ins for my previous vehicles. I have always been fanatical about the care of all my cars. Washed them myself, no car wash, so paintwork was always flawless. Ensured decent bodywork repair work on the odd fender bender (probably not more than 4 times in my life). Serviced on time etc. So even at high mileage, my cars were in tip top condition.

For eg. A few years ago, I traded my 2005 E90 330i with 205k kms. Highest offer I got was R70k. Which I felt was low, however I was not prepared to go through the hassle of a pvt sale. Eeeek! is all I can say, that car, compared to what is out there was in BRAND new condition. Compared to what people are asking, I would have got 100k EASY!

I went out to see a few cheapies. Descriptions says, either good condition, or excellent condition. Pics look decent enough. But when you go out to see it in person, OMG. Panels are repainted with what looks like a paintbrush, (I'm not exaggerating). Panel gaps don't align. Colour mismatched.

I'm I asking for too much, for the spend? I think I am. :(

Yap. Besides the useless junk, the majority of salesmen are snakes. Taking that from my visit to 20+ secondhand dealerships/garages.

My budget was 60K. Couldn't believe the junk out there (first time car buyer). Just as I lost hope a friend sold (one of his friends) me a Hyundai Accent 2006 model, 35 000K + major service (cambelt) included. It is not the lightest on fuel but excellent condition. Had now for a couple of months and is very grateful.

Is there a specific viscosity of elbow grease that you use?
 
i'm soon to sell my i20, very very good condition almost new 157 000km - just got new clutch, tires are good for another 50 000km FSH, I've used castrol magnatec religiously till 100 000km since first service. trade in price is about R106 000, not sure what dealerships want to offer me, but i may not take less than R90 000 for it.

The first gen 1.6? those were good cars.

If its just faded with no scratches or scuffs then a good plastic polish like Mothers or Even Meguiars Plastix will work. The one thing you have to remember is to seal them once done else they will oxidize again and then you will be back to square one. Try not to use a carnuaba based wax as that has a yellowing effect on plastic.
