thanks for the suggestions, i had a very quick look so far, seems like they just a little out of my range for something decent
The cheaper you go the more the repairs. Look for something that is cheap as chips to repair otherwise is going to hurt the pocket. Just make sure its a common brand with easily available parts and spares. So no Chevs, Renault, Peugeot etc.
Nissan Micra, Almera even Datsun Go.

yeah 100%, thats why even though i would like to go as cheap as possible i extended my budget a bit to not just end up with a complete problem

Starts as cheap, until it breaks and then it's no longer a cheap run around but a big door stop.

i hear you, but i also cant afford to buy something not as cheap as he has no income and i already have all my own commitments etc and family, i will already have to cover some things for now like licensing, servicing, insurance etc

I know this is the problem, is there no way to save a little more? Cause the jump to 50k can start getting a little better cars.

Stay away from any old VW or Toyota, they will get stolen.
Ford, eish if you really don't like them.
Any small petrol carb car will be cheap to maintain and fix, unless its some funny French or other car with expensive parts.
Maybe an Opel, most hate those things, so you should get them cheap

Those were horrible cars, my dad had one from brand new in 1998 and it was at the Mazda dealership a lot. Though personally I liked driving it, but I was 16.
Anything for the required budget will be horrible in varying degrees. Best to stick with the devil you know.

Nissan Almera: reliable, not expensive and spacious. Con is people will think you're there to pick them up.
Hyundai Accent : Very reliable, just watch out for rust, misuse etc
VW: Polo is solid but will be stolen by next week.
Kia Rio : Also very reliable, not sure if they're too new in the market for your price range tho.
Renault Clio/Megane: I wont go into detail but the ones i've had were reliable. I think its very dependent on who services them though. People who claim you wont find parts for them are clearly still stuck in 1995.
Toyota Corolla: Also very reliable, lasts forever. Might also be a bit on the theft list though.
Ford Figo/Other: Generally reliable and should not be too expensive to fix. Again, its up to perception. i know people with Figo's with 180k on the clock and they've never had so much as a wrong idle. I know others who've had problems. Could be similar to Renault where it depends who fixed/serviced it....

Yeah it will, I was looking for my niece who will be 18 in 2 years time and wow. When I was 18 way back R5k could get you an okay car, now 50k would get me a car of equivalent.

@Steamy Tom - someone either on here or Carb was selling an old Fiesta I think it was for about R30k. I'll have a look but it was a good deal on a decent runaround.

all have fairly high km, between 160k and 220k
As long as you understand that they are past the warranty periods and any repairs could be extremely costly and a definite. See what services those vehicles need at those mileages. Could be coming up to some serious money to be spent on a service.
