trying to explain to someone why spending R1500 on a camera that has zero optical zoom is a bad idea...

or not so?

some help please :)

A thorough argument will probably be pages long, and not likely to convince most people. It also depends heavily on what exactly you are comparing (e.g., Nokia PureView 808 is somewhat of an exception).

Why not try the following angle: You can buy a camera with optical zoom, and still apply additional "digital zoom" if you really want to?

Very bad idea. Best way to show how digital zoom works is find an icon image on a pc, load it up in some image software and increase it's size by 300%.

Let the person stand some distance from a tree and make him/her walk towards it until they can see the fine detail of the bark - tell them this is what a camera does with optical zoom
Then take any pic on a PC and zoom in until it is so pixelated that you can not make out what it is and show the person the process and tell then that is digital zoom

Just show him that :D

ok but anyway Digital zoom is when u make the pixel bigger ( cropping) the same is like zooming into a picture with your cellphone,In so doing, you lose image quality. Now optical zoom uses the optics (lens) of the camera to bring the subject closer and u dont lose image quality
