I am looking to buy one of these usb modems, is there somewhere you can purchase them for cash straight out? If so, how much are they?

Is it worth purchasing them out right or is contract a better option?

Contract .. u normally get if for free.

in some instances cheaper.
Currently my data card (as example) I pay R50 pm = R1200 24 months (100 free minutes)
same card cost R 1600 in the shop

You can get them from most Vodashops or Nashua Mobile in dbn. They about R1999 for the E220 3.6MB HSDPA USB Modem.

There are some lower-monthly commitment contracts, that basically amount to hire-purchase of the modem over 24 months with a small amount of bundled data per month, these are ok IMO, but I would definitely not advise committing to any higher-end contracts for a period of 24 months.

@w1z4rd, if you're wondering why I'm giving Vodacom & MTN the thumbs up for the lower-end E220 finance contracts that include a small amount of bundled data, and still criticising iBurst's 40MB per month modem finance contract, the reason is that iBurst charges a premium for additional data over & above the initial 40MB, whereas Vodacom does not, presumably MTN doesn't either, and [thread=95379]Vodacom now has much more flexible Ad-Hoc CDBs...[/thread]:)

I wouldnt touch Iburst with Mugabe`s wallet. Being there too many times. It seems the modems are selling for 2k+ and I worked it out that if you get the contract u only pay around R1440 for the modem assuming u take the 1gb bundle

There are contracts with less bundled data, and a smaller monthly pricetag, from there just add an Ad-Hoc CDB that fits your expected usage & budget for up to the next 30 days...

Why not wait for the newer ones to come. The e220 is old and Huawei have brought out newer and faster ones.

They brought out the E270. No point in getting that. It supports 7.2MB but 3.6MB isn't even supported as yet...Go for the E220.

Would still pay the R200 "extra" for a trusted name brand and peace of mind. Huawei dominates the the 3.6MB arena. No contest....

I bought my E220 USB modem a few months ago from our local Vodashop for R1200.00 cash. I also bought a starter pack from PnP for R2.50 so now I just purchase the Databundle that I want and I’m good to go without being tied down by a two year contract.
