So I want to buy a motorcycle but no idea where to start.

Looking for a 2nd hand BMW F650GS 2000 - 2002 model. Alot of nice bikes on Gumtree and most are private sales.

What is the best route to start this process?
Do I apply for a personal loan from FNB (currently using FNB) or do I go to via Wesbank and apply for Private Finance?

I was on Wesbank's website and they don't give financing for vehicles older than 8 years.

Don't want to pay more than R1200 pm if that is at all possible?
These bikes go for anything between R35k - R42k

I bought my bike recently for R40k and paying R1600 pm over 2 years (With 10k deposit). If you take a longer term you should get it to under R1200 pm but you're going to be paying a lot more interest obviously.

I've seen a couple of 650GSs 2004-2006 models for around R35k, maybe shop around some more.

Also, vehicle finance for such low amounts attract massive interest rates, so a personal loan should not work out much more expensive, and it's much easier to get.

BTW, why exactly the 650GS? What type of riding do you want to do?

Also have you had a bike before?

Well, want to do some long distance on weekends and then some semi off-roading.
Will also be used to get to work on a daily basis 10km +-

Had one bike about 7 years ago when I was 16... 150cc Yamaha scrambler. Nice toy :)

Oh yes, you can't go wrong with any GS for off-roading :D

It is an awesome bike for sure. If I were you I'd shop around a bit, go to different dealers and see what they've got, most dealers have different makes on the floor, usually trade-ins. Once you find one you want within your price range financing is quick and easy. On my last bike the financing took 2 hours to approve.

You can also check out the Think Bike forums, those guys are very helpful and there is a ton of info: http://forum.thinkbike.co.za/

Be very careful when going for a BMW motorcycle. It is extremely expensive to maintain and reliability is very poor compared to any other non-chinese bike manufacturers.

Its not an ideal bike if you have to take out a loan to get it. Suggest shopping around more.

EDIT: Forgot to say something useful :erm: Perhaps look at a used KLR650? When maintained properly those things are very cheap and easy to keep going.
