I'm interested in buying a new camera, a bit vague, I know, but hold onto your seats!

I'm an amateur photographer and I want a decent DSLR, which I do not have. I don't even know where to begin!

I want to able to adjust all the settings manually and maybe capture HD videos with it as well. Okay, maybe that is a tad too much to want with my budget but I'm allowed to dream!

I can spend around R10 000 on a new camera, what so you guys suggest?
:o

Canon G9 with a metal casing.
Canon G10 was great... the best
Canon G11

Get my drift.
The Canon G series is pretty cool with most modern technology. Best of all is the size wight and battery life!
Remember change your settings to the HIGHEST/best quality. you know why.

Either a 60D or a 600D or even a 550D. All are pretty decent and allow for full control. The 60D will set you back 9K for the body and a lense can be had 2nd hand for around R1000. The 600D and 550D will cost you under 10K and come with a lense.

Didn't he specify a DSLR?

Have a look at the Canon 600D or the Nikon D3100

I can vouch for the Nikon D3100. Good camera at a very good price. Watch out for the Double lens-kit specials.

Still learning but I reckon I've taken some half decent still shots already.

Never used it but apparently it can take HD video too.

I've always like the 550D :)

Extremely high praises everywhere I've read and a very decent price too

I would go for the Canon 60D for your purpose. Very new on the market with all the new features

I bought the 500D and kicked myself that I didn't go a step above. I needed the faster shutter speed and faster fps, so I am now getting the Canon 7D in the USA next month.....I have a nice Canon lens, so I am sticking with Canon

Nikon D3100 with 18-55mm, 55-300mm and 35mm F1.8 lens + Nikon Action 8X40 binoculars + Nikon bag + 8gig SD card for R9899 at sacamera.co.za.
Honestly, best deal under R10k at the moment (I bought it today).

Edit: Ah, I see BobJones already mentioned the kit, but my link is R100 cheaper :D

If you're an amateur photographer, and decide to go more professional at some stage then rather spend your money on a semi-pro body like the Canon D50 / D60. Both are great cameras and will give you a lot of millage. Then, later on just spend some extra cash on a decent lens or two, in the field of your photography. The Canon 50mm 1.4 is a superb lens and great for studio work, but you can use it for most things. I often just use the 50mm for just about everything.

Yeah, I agree. If you think you're in it for the long haul, even if it's not professionally, get the best you can now, instead of trying to sell a lower end camera on an already saturated second hand market, in order to upgrade.

I don't know - there's a strong argument to be made for not selling the original camera so you have a spare on hand. Essential if the plan is to ever offer professional services.

Of course, but if you assume he wants to have the best as an amateur, then there's no real need for a backup, and he wants to go pro, then even his backup is of a better quality ;)

Yes, that's the "other side of the coin". But then you need to make sure you have the same brands (i.e. Canon & Nikon don't mix lenses) and same / similar range. For example, with a 1000D / 600D you could use EF + EF-S lenses, but with a 5D (for example) you can't use an EF-S lens. So, if you do buy a camera check this as well.

Interestingly, I have a 30D (also amateur photographer) which was about R14K when it was last sold, but they got about about R4K 2nd hand right now. So, bodies don't have much value when new models come out. But, my 50mm lens can't be brought 2nd hand - I've been offered R4K for it once but refused cause I don't know if I would get a new one again.

Some lenses (especially the professional, aka L-lenses in Canon) often don't loose value and sometimes even gain value due to popularity
