Buying a new camera

I'm a Canon fan and will vouch for the Canon. BUT, take the same R5K and get a 500D bundle instead.

The Nikon 3xxxx range is flimsy and "cheap"

Respectfully disagree. I see no build quality difference between the D3000/3100 and the 1000D.

I think the entry level Canons have a distinctly more "plasticky" feel than the entry level Nikons.

+1, 1000D build quality is not nearly as good as the D3000/D3100. Both will serve a beginner well though.

Thats another option = D3000 or D3100. I see the only real difference is the HD movie. Have only seen one bundle going for the D3000.

Thanks a lot for all the suggestions guys!

Okay, I’ve checked Cannon and Nikon as my main offers and since all of you put valid arguments out there I am going to do the sensible thing and test most of the cameras all of you suggested from both brands.

I would love to take my photography more seriously so I really appreciate you guys who gave me some top tips from the more "not-so-beginner-ish" cameras. For me it is the same as when I bought a guitar, I took a more professional model and make, after testing and playing a bunch of them. The simple reason for this is the fact I love to begin with a great feeling product.

On a side note here, is anybody aware of a shop in Pretoria or a reliable online retailer that sells vintage cameras and film? It started as a recent hobby of mine but I simply love the effects and feel some vintage cameras give.

Thanks again everybody, you've made my decision much easier and I know now that I'll be able to browse for a new DSLR with ease and some knowledge.

It's about how they feel in your hand. D3000/3100 felt much better in my hand, more solid.

Just BTW, I totally agree. The DSLR has to feel sturdy in the photographers hands and the more solid the feeling for me the more ease of photography. Otherwise I could have opted for a standard teeny tiny camera.

Some more 2c, you might want to consider a longer "walkabout" lens than a shorter 18-55 + 55-±200. I quickly got tired of changing lenses, as well lugging 2 around, as well as the annoyance of possibly getting dust on the filter. Nowadays, my 18-135 stays on my D40 all the time and I can get good zoom without changing lenses. I only paid R1,500 for it, second hand. So a possibility could be a new body, and then going for longer walkabout lenses second-hand.

I see Canon also have a relatively cheap 28-250 lens? Nice range. Maybe Nikon have something similar if you end up preferring the feel of them.

You could always buy my 2nd hand D3000 to see if you actually like photography :D ;)

At R9,999 I would be more interested in the Nikon D3100 bundle with the 35mm (or is it 50mm) f1.8.
