Buying a new camera

You must remember also that Nikon lenses are more expensive than Canon should you wish to start buying higher end ones.

Actually, most Nikon gear sosts more than Canon.

Im selling my 500D if you're interested? R6000 with kit lense and memory card. You can always spend what you have on better glass. The 50mmF/1.4 is a damn fine lense for such a small price. PM if interested.

How many actuations? You can buy the kit new for R6400... Just saying.

Some interesting discussion here.

If I had R10,000 to spend on camera equipment today, the first thing I would be looking at are the second hand deals available on www.outdoorphoto.co.za. I would choose an excellent lens first and then consider a body later.

On the Nikon side of things if you are going to be sticking with the DX format (cropped sensor) you can pick up some astonishingly good 2nd hand DX lenses for well within your budget these days. Look for the 18-200mm VR, which you should be able to pick up used for about R5-6k. Then you can look at second hand DSLR bodies like the excellent Nikon D70/D80/D90, or look at the entry level bodies like the D3100 and D5100. Stay away from the kit lenses if you can. They are usually sub-optimal. Nikon have a very, very good 70-300mm VR lens, which I have, but as I have moved on to a better lens I am selling mine for R3,500.

You should also consider other less fancied brands like Olympus. They have just introduced the new Olympus Pen EP-2 which you can get new for about R6,000 with the standard lens. Very good camera and I will be getting one myself (I do photography for a living).

Thnaks for the site reference, I never thought about it like that. Will check it out. :)

I have no experience with high-end lenses but my D3100 kit lenses are pretty good and sharp IMO. Especially for a beginner like myself.

This is a photo I took just yesterday with the 55-200mm kit lens. I also posted it in the "Stop what you're doing right now and take a photo.." thread.

After I get the hang of all the features and I'm comfortable with my camera I am going to save up for a decent all purpose lens.
I'm already eyeing the 70-300mm(for my sports photography) which is pretty affordable for beginners.

That's a good looking image. Do you have the 55-200mm with VR? The VR feature is something I won't overlook in future purchases, especially for telephoto lenses. PM me if you're interested in my 70-300mm.

Yes sorry. Both my Kit Lenses are the ones with VR.
RE: 70-300mm Lens - That lens is so tempting but the wife will kill me if I even dare to buy a new lens now. I'll keep in mind that you are looking to sell and if I get to the point where I am ready I will definitely contact you first.

I know the feeling. :) My wife eventually gave up on trying to keep tabs on what I bought. Now she just rolls her eyes when I start talking about lenses and other camera stuff.

I can vouch for the Sigma 70-300 APO DG. I use it on a Canon though.
