Howzit guys!

I need help!

I'm in need of a new TV and honestly I'm a bit lost. No idea what exactly to look for.
Was thinking something decent, UHD, Smart, 55"+ and thinking spending around +-R20k should be ok.

Noticed a SAMSUNG 55" Smart Curved UHD LED TV (UA55JU6600) for R17k
What do you think?

Would appreciate any opinions and help on the matter.

Thanks!

Don't buy a TV for it's "smart" capabilities, get a decent set-top box if you want that functionality, don't buy curved and don't buy UHD yet.

Other than that you're on the right track;)

Yeah, avoid "smart" tvs, if you plan to stream heavily, buy a roku or new apple tv instead.

Some interesting commends here.

No Smart
No Curve
No UHD (huh why, this thing needs to last a bit)

Anyone want to point me a make and model ie?

Wait and see what Black Friday specials you can get. :p

I also wouldn't pay more for Smart or curved, but UHD I would go for. Future proofs the TV a bit. Dunno if you can even get non-smart TVs anymore...

I haven't any decent non smart TVs lately...
I would also recommend going for UHD!

Not sure why people would recommend to stay away form that?

Make sure about the number of input's (HDMI, etc) on the TV. The cheaper ones tend to have only 2 HDMI inputs, which might cause headaches in the future.

OK some reasoning:

No Smart = you won't get a TV that doesn't have "smart" capabilities, just saying don't buy one because of these, they're always shyte... Spend 2k on a proper DroidTV box if you need streaming or to play your "linux distros"
No Curve = it's a marketing gimmick, there's no point paying more for a TV that just decreases viewing angles and not much else
No UHD (huh why, this thing needs to last a bit) = the cost premium from HD to UHD is still very high, and there is no UHD content out there, nor is there UHD content being filmed yet, it's going to be 5-7 years before the switch up to UHD happens and you'll need a new TV by then.

Get the best screen you can. Avoid any 'smart' capabilities, and just add an Apple TV (or Roku if you prefer)

I smell BS. All new Netflix shows will be 4k and I assume Amazon Prime video as well. The only non smart tv you will find here will be that Samsung Plasma if you can find one that is.

Ok "no UHD content" was said for emphasis, there is very little UHD content. The only way to access UHD in SA for a good long while will be through streaming, in which case you need at least a 25Mbps conn which isn't the easiest thing to come by...

So you'll be spending 10k more on the TV, plus 2k a month on a fibre line(if you can get it) to watch the 10 series Netflix produces...

There will be a time when it makes sense to buy UHD, that time isn't here yet.

http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/783075-HEVC-and-H-265-encoding!! H265 was made for 4k. Also why will he be spending 10k more for a UHD tv? He will actually spend less on a 55" non curved UHD tv.

What does H.265 have to do with it? Netflix 4k streams are already H.265 and they still recommend a 25mbit connection....

Ok UHD prices are much closer to FHD than when I last checked, I still wouldn't pay the premium for 4k just yet, 2-3 years and if I'm in the market then maybe. But that's just me, I get annoyed playing anything less than 1080 on my TV because it's a "waste" to me;)

And what's the point of buying these 4k TVs if they are going to be replaced with 4k TVs with a DisplayPort Connection in any case? (hopefully soon)

Where can I buy a nice 60" bracket in Cape Town. Easy to fit the TV and to get behind the TV. How my much do they cost nowadays
