Buying a second hand bakkie

Hi all,

Looking for your good and honest advice, hopefully from experience :)

If one was looking to buy a second hand bakkie, what would the best option/s be? I would think about R300k and Preferably less than 80k km but I can figure out the cost and km's if it ever got that far.

In my mind options would be:

1. Toyota Hilux previous shape - 2.5D4D or 3.0 D4D
2. Ford Ranger current shape 2.2 Diesel or 3.2 Diesel
3. VW Amarok 2.0TDI or 2.0BiTDI

Very important - reliability - this is the no 1 factor for me. If the bakkie is still in manafacturer warranty great and I will probably take out an extended one but this doesn't need to form part of this chat. Resale value is also very important and from what I can tell the Toyota tops both here. But the previous shape interior is pretty outdated which is uuggg.

Features:

1. 4x4 - although at a very stretch this could be left out and 4x2 OK. Just thinking if one goes down this route is might be good to have the 4x4 then its there.
2. Climate Control preferred to AC
3. Cruise Control
4. Airbags - not sure if the bakkies come with front and curtain?
5. MP3 USB port
6. Nudge bar, roll bar and tow bar.
7. Leather
8. Trip computer
9. ABS/EDB/ESC/BAS

What do you guys think?
 
Personally, I would always go with toyota, my reasons being the cheap price/availability of parts. Also, toyota is one of, if not the most reliable vehicles on the road in my opinion (and experience). I dont think there is much in the margins of 4x4 capability between different makes, but again, I would go toyota.
 
Interesting comparison to do is the insurance premium for your chosen models. I suspect that Toyota will be more expensive as it is rated as the most stolen bakkie in S.A.

If reliability is key you will also find some value with the Mitsubishi. Check out the www.4x4community.co.za for all pro's and cons on your options list. Lot's of info.
 
I was driving a Hilux DC Legend 45 the holidays. What machine! It should tick the majority of those boxes and looks great too.

I feel the same about the reliability. We were just on holiday at the coast and the amount of Toyota bakkies - which must all have been out of warranty was massive so that told me something. Do you drive one? Just wondering if you can confirm that the parts really are cheap?

Guess the triton resale value won't be great
 
The interior was decent actually. Touchscreen infotainment with USB and reverse camera. Nice leather seats too. Could easily be a daily driver.

OK that is cool. Looking at the link P00HB33R sent...some decent buys for R300k...I was not so sure you'd find anything decent for that price. The Toyotas seem to have amazing resale value. I see some folk selling models from the 90's for R90k to R120k

I only drive toyota. Had the 3.0D4D single cab, then the 3.0D4D DC, then the Tuna4x4 3.0D4D and now the new model 2.8GD6 DC 4x4
Never had to buy spares/parts for any of them. Though I once saw genuine parts for a hilux in a little kuka shop in mozambique :p

Toyota parts (especially hilux) are some of the cheapest to procure in africa. Also, as mentioned, resell value on toyota's are among the highest.

Thanks a mil, really appreciate the feedback especially since its coming from a place of 1st hand experience. So you recon if I did buy a second hand Hilux and it falls out of warranty it should be OK? I just get the feeling its a safe option. I has a yaris, drove it to 192 000km and only changed the brakes on it. Have another one still and its on 130 000km and same thing...they just work. I really believe in the reliability of Toyota. I would really like a 4x4 DC Legend 45
