Buying a smartphone from amazon or ebay

Due to the exorditant costs of cellphones in South Africa, especially those on a 24 month contract, I have considered buying from from one of these sites. It occurred to me that it should at least be able to operate on a GSM network as well as being unlocked in order for it to be compatible with one of our local cellular operators.

I would appreciate any comments from you guys in this regard !

It might or might not, check the specifications of the particular phone.

Also, WHY IS THE TITLE SCREAMING AT US, WE CAN ALL READ JUST FINE.
 
Apologies Guys, I never realised the title was screaming at you ! I don't often leave messages on here so I guess I'm less familiar with the nuts and bolts of writing a message than most of you. I wonder what I did to make it do that ?
 
First check if it's a GSM phone, easy enough.

Secondly check to see that it's not locked.

Thirdly check if they will ship to SA.

@Kangaroo Jack - are you aware of Orange (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orange_S.A.) who ship to South Africa.

You can register / buy from the local 'arm' of their site, but be warned that some (many?) people on the forum have experienced sloppy service & delayed delivery times.

I've not bought from them so cannot comment either positively/negatively on their service - there was a long thread which was deleted for some obscure reason. Their pricing on some of the phones is reasonable, much more so than the 3 to 4 major networks here.
