Hi guys

Can you please help me as I am still new at this. What are all the documents one should get from the dealer when buying a used car?

Your help will be much appreciated.

The dealer will give you an invoice, obviously, plus the NATIS documents pertaining to your car - he will have asked you for your ID and signature on the blue forms, so that he can license and register the car in your name.

If it's a bank deal, they will ask for forms, such as latest pay slip, proof of address, and ID, as well. If it's cash, he won't release the car until the money is reflected in his bank.

Finally, he is not allowed to sell the car to you "As Is" or voetstoets - he must roadworthy the car and sell it at least with a 1 month/1000 km warranty of some sort.

Fazda, if you don't mind, could you do a similar recap for private purchases?

If it's private - you will have obviously decided whether you are going voetstoets or with RWC.

Anyway - which ever way you go - on payment for the car, you must get some sort of receipt from the seller ( one that includes all of his details, including ID and at least 2 contact numbers) He must then supply you with a signed yellow form, plus the original NATIS documents pertaining to the car. That document MUST be in his name, otherwise you don't have any proof that the car is fully paid for on his side. He can get you to sign the yellow form, but he should then take it and hand it in to the licensing department, thus ensuring that you get the car into your name within 21 days. When you licence the car yourself, you will need to have filled in the blue licensing document - Part A and C, plus have the NATIS and a copy of the RWC. The RWC copy is not essential, as legitimate RW stations are linked to the system, and your car should pop up as just having passed the test - I like to take my own copy, however, just to be on the safe side.

That should be it :)

Thanks Fazda, that has been really helpful!

Where does one get the yellow form? I guess from the vehicle licensing centre? Is it acceptable to use a printed version of the document, or must it be the original binded one in colour?

Whose responsibility is it to put the car through the test for a RWC? Buyer or seller?

All forms are available from the Licensing department - best to get originals, then you know what you are dealing with.

Yellow is to be signed by seller and buyer, and should be handed in by seller.

Blue is for buyer to complete and hand in on registration.

Most private deals are voetstoets, which means that the buyer has to put the car through the RW test himself. You cannot register the car to go on the road until the RW test is done, you CAN, however, simply get it into your name if you intend to do extensive work on it prior to roadworthy. The Licensing guys will hold your disc back until you supply them with a RWC.

So... funny story. My wife went to the licensing department today and they don't have any of the required papers. Going to just complete the printed ones and hope for the best.

On a similar topic...

Got my papers from the bank for my car that was settled and honestly can't remember what I needed to do last time round to change the titleholder.

Bank papers include just the single form and says it needs to be done before the annual license is issued.

Paperwork itself says it needs to be done in 21 days and needs to be accompanied by another form...but I suspect this is only applicable to a buy/sell scenario and full change of ownership, whereas in my case I am already the owner just the titleholder is being updated?

They should have sent you a signed yellow form - all you do is sign your section, and then fill in a blue form, take that with your ID to the department, and they will put it into your name.

Yes, that's the one with your details, that finally gets it into your name. You fill in Part A and C - sign A and complete C from the NATIS on the car.

I was under the impression it is already in my name as per the paperwork.

In the sense that I am already the owner, the bank is just the titleholder.

My details and the car details already go on the one form they gave me that is stamped and signed.

****

And I recall those sections being A and C.

No, it sounds weird, but the owner has to be the title owner as well. Up until then, you are just the person who has custody of the car on behalf of the bank.

Yes I understand that, which is why I asked since their letter states I only need the one form which they have attached making me think the process is slightly different as it's not really a buy and sell situation.

But filling in a spare form won't kill me, so I'll just do it.
