Hi Guys

New to the place

I am looking at getting a used car for up to R45 000

now I know I won't get latest or greatest so long as it would be more reliable then my 2007 Ford Fiesta

also no VW Citi golfs or toyota tazzs or any korean no mater how reliable they are

I was eyeing a VW Jetta 4 but getting one proofs difficult

thanks for the help

PS I live in Cape Town

For someone with a tiny budget, you sure are picky! My first few choices would be Koreans, then the Fiesta (earlier model than yours), but I have a feeling you're looking for something similar to your current car. Best bang for your buck would be Hyundais or Kias.

At R45k most cars will probably have the same or worse reliability as your Fiesta.

What problems does the Fiesta have? Just trying to determine if it's general maintenance stuff (It's a 10 year old car now).

Previous gen Polo or Vivo if you don't mind the associated hijack risk.

Otherwise get an older Corolla, they just go on and on and on with decent maintenance and if you stick to servicing it regularly

the problem with my fiesta is mostly electrical my instruments would turn them selves off as I go along the road in other words as I drive along I can suddenly see no temp no fuel ,no range ,no mileage and until I turn the engine off plus within a month I had replace the breaks ,the clutch and all the wheel bearings and the two wheel hubs of the front wheels plus its black so its an oven when ever the sun is in the sky

the small budget is mostly due to that is what I have in cash as I can't get an loan due to no credit history and banks don't like that otherwise I would of had more to spend

PS. my open door indicator would also pop up as I drive along and my alarm would just go off and random times even if there is no wind or if no one is near it

You could look at it this way: you've already spent so much to fix many big issues on your car, so now all it has left seems to all be related to some electrics issue (maybe a short in the system somewhere?). Get that last issue fixed by an auto electrician, and you'll then not have to spend R45 000 plus you'll have a car where you've fixed all its issues and you trust it (unlike somebody else's car that they're selling for R45 000 - which will have its own headaches).

trouble is no one knows whats the problem I have sent it to a few auto electricians that are near to me with no real success and I have no real faith in its ability to take me more then 20km from my home anyway and was warned not to take it as the mileage on it was way more then average for its age.

What's the mileage on your fiesta?
Sounds like 1 of the body earth connectors is no longer attached.

You're going to be buying pretty much the same as you've got. R45k isn't going to get you anything better, rather take that and fix what you've got.

That's not high mileage imho, had a 2002 ford with 379k on the clock when I sold it bought it in 2015 with 265k on. Previous owner had replaced gearbox and engine, sold it because he was convinced it was a lemon.
Fix the electrics and keep the fiesta, you've already spent the big bucks on it.

well if i can find a place that can fix the electrics i guess i will keep it trouble is the only place i have not gone to to have it check is ford it self and i am a bit scared of the prices they can charge.

also i just don't understand the how french cars are so universally hated
as i know quite a few people who have french cars and can't stop talking how great they and they are about the same age as my car

They will still probably come in cheaper then buying a new car.

if you are near Maitland I highly recommend Autowizards, no.5 on 15th street

they do mostly diagnostic and insurance work, unfortunately they open again only next week but they will give you a good price and more than likely fix your issues

I will have to see most of my budget comes from selling my car first before buying it's replacement but if I add all that I have I would have R74 000 to spend

but would like to keep most of that so that is why i am for R45000

Yeah sometimes you just get tired of the car, you don't even want it anymore even after fixing it.

well finding it's replacement is difficult as the only other cars that I can find in my price range that have lower kilos and have almost the same specs are french cars.

that is why I wonder if they are so terrible why did people buy them?
