Buying first car, any advice?

Its Roux's response on a VAG. No reason necessary....

They are overpriced and a high risk to insure.

Edit : You forgot Lamborghini, Porsche and Bentley.

To be honest I was looking at an Audi s3 2008 model. I have always wanted this car since I was in highschool. Looking at keeping the car for about 3 years max. Just kind of feel it is a milestone I need to reach.

Any ideas why this is a bad idea? I shall never buy a golf gti... Would rather stick to the taxis I am taking currently.

An 8 year old performance Audi? Only if you get a good price I reckon as it's likely to have been thrashed. How many previous owners?

Do you have budget for tyres?
Money for a lot of petrol?
Money for stuff to break?
Money for services?

Just don't do it unless you have the cash on hand.

As said before, keep cash on hand for repairs. I don't think the S3 has "strange" parts eg. the shocks on the RS4/RS6 that need a specialist to work on.

Also don't skimp on tires. Get something like the Michelin PS3, don't try to save money on cheap tires. Not on any car, but a performance car even more so.

They are likely going to rape you on insurance, how long have you had your license for? When I bought my Audi some places didn't even gave me insurance, at any price.

I would not suggest going into debt for buying a toy though.

Shew! As long as you have a trusted VW/Audi mechanic nearby, chances are that car will have had the crap driven out of it.

What sort of monthly budget will you be working with? If like me you are in your 20s, preprare for crazy insurance, with an S3 I'd bet on around ~R1500pm, then work from there.

Use this to calculate your potential monthly car installments:

And factor in how much you'll spend on petrol, I'm not too sure how large the S3 tank is, maybe 60L? So ~R700 to fill the tank.
