Buying games on Steam

I want to buy a game on Steam, but I have a friends installation disks, I don't want to be forced to download it. Will I get a CD key when I purchase the game on steam so I can use the installation disks?

just buy the game pause the download, backup the downloaded steam game with the steam app, use the restore feature and it will use the backed up game files.

Not sure if the Key would work with disk versions?

Depends on the game, i've received activation/cd keys from all games i've purchased on steam that does not run directly via steam. You usually get it when you start the installation/download [you can stop/pause the installation right afterwards].

Steam checks if the game is available to you from your own account. You can use a friends' disks (backups) to restore the game into your steam. It will verify the validity of the files and give you access to the game. No need to download twice
