Ok so i've noticed a few threads on this topic. I'm starting my own one now, hoping to get some decent and helpful feedback from you lovely people.

I wanna buy a new pc, i would like it to have an i7 cpu. My budget is R12 000, but under R10 000 would do nicely. I don't need a monitor etc..Just a case with the necessary hardware. What would i be able to conjure up with the above mentioned amounts?

Thanx in advance

I just have my heart set on one, i know the i5 is also decent but i want a i7. I will do some gaming on it so i guess i need a decent gpu.

Hmmm....
If you must have an i7...
CPU - i7 930 = R2500
Mobo = R2100 and up
Memory G.Skill 1600 DDR3 CL9 1.5V = R1066
GPU HD6870 = R2200
PSU - ??? You need one?

Total = R7900
Could go for a better GPU I guess, alternatives would be GTX470, SLI GTX460 and xfire HD6870 (those should keep you under R10k)

Yep i need a PSU a new case as well. I was thinking about getting the HAF but its quite expensive. How much does the Gtx 470 retail for?

Ok...
GTX470 = R3200 last time I checked and gives you a whopping 3% more FPS on average than the HD6870. Dunno why I even listed it in my earlier post now
Anyway, a case will set you back R1000 - CM690ii, probably the best value case out there right now
PSU - R600 500W Corsiar should be fine unless you want to leave room for another GPU later on. Then get a 600-700W PSU
Adding on those necessaties puts the total cost at R9500 (still with the single HD6870)

Dude don't skimp on the case. You buy one expensive one and it will last.

I used to change cases once a year until i bought the haf, now i doubt i will ever need another one. Regardless of the make buy a good case with loads of space and it will last.

With your budget get a minimum of a 600-650W PSU and buy 6870.

Ok so i think i should go for the HAF and maybe cut down on the mobo and perhaps go for the Asus P7P55D...what do you guys think about that motherboard?

That's LGA1156, looks like you're wanting LGA1366 for i7 930/950.

±R2900 ASUS P6X58D-E ; 32nm 6-core cpu ready , with USB3.0+SATA 6Gb/s ; LGA1366 mb ; on-board on/off/clear CMOS switch , fanless heatpipe design , 3-way nVidia SLI / ATi coressfire ready ; intel X58+iCH10R , 6x tripple channel 2-phase DDR3 2000 ( support XMP upto 1.69v ) , 8 x s-ata2 with raid 0/1//0+1/5/10 ( 2x SATA 6G + 6 x SATA3G ) , no parallel ata133 , on-board ALC889 7.1 audio with coaxial+optical S/Pdif out + gigabit lan + ieee1394a ; 2x pci , 1 x pci-e(1x) , 3 x pci-e 2.0 (16x+16x+1x or 16x+8x+8x ) - 16+2 phase power design , EPU6 http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=gFBKfNyhppW9tDbB

That mobo is a LGA1156 socket, I assumed you wanted a LGA1366 based i7 CPU ie i7 930?

There is also that other intel coming early next year i recall from another thread, can you wait until mid jan or so?

Don't skimp on the PSU either. Go for an 550W or higher, 80+ certified unit with 5-yr warranty:

(in order of price)

Cooler Master GX550 (approx R750)
Corsair VX550W (approx R850)
Corsair TX650W (approx R1050)

Any of these will do fine for a standard build running 1-3 SATA HDD's, a few 120mm fans and the basic components

What's the difference between the i7 930 and the i7 870 because the latter can fit on the P7P55D seeing as it supports the latest 1156 socket intel core i7 processors

I would get:

Coolermaster CM690 II Advanced Tower Chassis - No PSU R968.20
Intel Core i7-950 Quad Core 3.03GHz LGA1366 Processor R2930.60
2x Club3D CGNX-X46024 GeForce GTX460 1GB GDDR5 256-bit PCI-E 2.0 R1962.51 (x2)
Samsung HD103SJ SATA2 1TB F3 7200RPM 32MB HDD R514.41
Intel SSDSA2MP040G2R5 2.5" 40GB SATA2 SSD (for windows+a few games) R1177.51
MSI X58A-GD65 LGA1366 Triple-Channel DDR3 3-Way SLI / CrossFireX R2144.34
Kingston Hyper-X KHX1600C7D3K2/4GX 2x2GB Kit DDR3-1600 1.65v CL7 R994.63
LG GH22LS50 22x Lightscribe SATA Black & Beige R225.41
Antec TP-750 TruePower Blue 750w Modular Power Supply Unit R1529.63

------------------
R14 405 (prices from Prophecy.co.za)
------------------

yeah I know its too much, but i think you can save some on the case, power supply and RAM but im a bit lazy to look now

sorry, no idea how much that is in total :)
i might be waaay off

I would go with naketpeanut's suggestion!
Edit:
The motherboard & graphics card (never saw how cheap it was!) that he suggested are really amazing for their price!
The CX500 PSU is good enough, but it only comes with a 3yr warranty, unlike the Corsair TX/HX or CoolerMaster GX series power supplies.
To give you an idea, my i7 940 @ 3.9GHz + 2x GTX460 @ 878MHz core/4460MHz mem didn't even consume 500W max!
The HD 5870 will draw more power than the HD 6870 and I'm not sure how well it will scale in CrossFire. If you think that you'll buy another HD 5870 in the near future, I would suggest that you get a Corsair GX750 so that you have some room to play with.

The SSD that DUDE!@##$%% suggested is just TOO small. Either go for 2x G.Skill Phoenix 60GB SSD's in RAID0 (~R4460 in total) or 1x G.Skill Phoenix 120GB SSD (~R2140). Unfortunately these SSD's are out of stock at Wootware at this moment.

CF HD5870 = CF HD6870. So if your plan is to CF in future the HD6870 is the better bet since it costs a bit less and uses less power

im sure that the 5870 doesnt crossfire scale very well, whereas the 6970's have like a 90% scaling ish...
from the many graphs i Have seen, the crossfire 6870's are better in almost ever game and slightly cheaper?

Ill see if i can look em up...

EDIT: found it:
http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon-hd-6850-6870-crossfirex-review/7

they are very reputable, and just have a look through the different games, usually the 6870's come out on top, not always by much, but considering the price/power draw/ resell value (5800 series in no longer in production) its definetely a better choice...

You could've saved yourself some searching and just looked at my sig. On average CF HD6870 beats CF HD5870 by 4.1 fps
