Hi was just wandering what converter I would need to power up a PC from America? that has about roughly 500w , would I just need something like a step down converter?, thats what i did with the ol' xbox...

Most modern stuff, including PC switch mode power supplies, have an input range from 85 odd volts all the way up to 265 volts, which covers both the yank 110V and the 220/240V power grids, so you may not need anything! Check the input voltage rating of the PC first.

Just check the voltage range on the PSU. If it does not do (220-240V) just replace the psu if it's a standard one. Else some have a little red 110v/220v selector on the back.

so we are either 220 V or 240 V and I just need to check on the PSU if it says that and if it does not I have to .....?

...not turn it on. In std 6 I put one of the school's pc's power supply switches on 110v and there was a bright spark followed by smoke when someone switched it on. Everything fried.

So Should I add the 650W ATX12V/ EPS12V SLI Crossfire Ready supply which adds another 62$ , is this necessary ?

ZOMG that power supply looks like a scam ... as long as it supports 220/240 V then no need to change it!

Power in SA can range from anything between 220V-240V depending on where you are but the range is fine. Just check the label on the PSU before even plugging it in.

Do you have a link to the PSU you are getting?

He has replied and said that he sees no reason why it should not work in South Africa so I hope it works but will obviously check to see if it supports it...

Just out of curiosity, why buy from the US? What about support?

Do you know that a high end GPU will not fit in that case, max card length is 25.5cm?

Let us know what they mail you back.

No I know that was not my configuration, that was the stock option, in my actual configuration I chose a much bigger case (NZXT Apollo ) This site was much cheaper than any other site or pc supplier I could find. R7500(including Shipping) for relatively high end Pc with a HD 4870 quad core and the likes, it was much cheaper than anywhere I could find. The Computers that they make (Titanus Computers) go through rigorous testing of the computers are shipped out so support is not such a big deal.

The guy said that he sees no reason why the computer would not work on a 220V/240V ... So i don't need a converter or anything?

thanks for the help so far....

Honestly... I think you're silly trying to cut corners and importing your pc! But... that's just me!

When you get it the total price will be R11550 taking handling fees & VAT into consideration if my calculations are correct (Value of goods x 1.1 x 1.14).

I know this is quite a silly question but does "gift" marked items not apply to a package this large?

no, the cost of shipping still applies, which on its own will be quite costly, marking it as gift only saves you from paying the local tax for bringing it in!

So by shipping you mean VAT and handling fees and not the actual fee supplied by UPSP or any of the shipping companies and are you guys sure it is really that Hefty, Surely it cant be!!

thanks guys in advanced...

There are no guarantees on that. If SARS stops it, finds no invoice, they will either charge you on the insured amount marked on the parcel or will request a proper invoice from you.

Also, get proper track and trace with signed-for delivery. It's not unlikely for a parcel even that large to go missing.
