I like my Linksys WRT54GL cos it's so flexible. Can run DD-WRT, Tomato. That said, it's a router, not a router+modem and you need to plug a modem in. It's a great little unit tho.

Absolute best option: get a Dlink dgn-2500u adsl router; it's by far the best performing router on the market.
That leaves you with about R870 to buy any dedicated wireless switch you want.

End result: best possible adsl performance and stability, with high powered wireless network, as many Ethernet ports you can get + easily expandable in future.

Heh, so how do you qualify that statement?
Can it run custom firmware?

Can't even find it with google... did you perhaps mean dsl-2500u?

Whoopsy, a slip of the fingers. Yip, a DSL-2500u.

I've had just about every router made tried on my line. Nothing comes close. Here are my line stats:

SNR Margin (dB): 5.7 11.0
Attenuation (dB): 61.0 31.5

Every other router I've ever tried runs terribly slow, or just terribly (they only connect at 0.8meg, or not at all). I stay around 4km from the box, but this router connects at 3.3meg, of which I can use every bit/sec perfectly.

I've shown it to my friends, they all tried it, it performed vastly better on all their lines. (Get esquire to hook you up with one. They used to be around R140)

Since it is just a simple ADSL routed modem, it does not need any fancy firmware. That can all be done on the powerfull wireless switch that you buy with the rest of the money. The router it's self has all the usual bells and whistles including dydns support and DDoS pretection- what else would you want from a pure ADSL router?

To give some perspective, the original telkom router we had wouldn't connect at all. Other routers would drop the line when we used the phone. Belnkin routers would only connect at 0.6meg. This thing gives us full blown 3.3meg and we can use the phone at the same time.

And it is dirt cheap. You have nothing to lose, really.

@agentfr: 2Mbps+ with a line attenuation of 61dB is VERY impressive!

Like my church's Netgear DG834GUv5 can't even manage a stable 2Mbps with a line attenuation of 40dB! Now I'm using a D-Link DSL-2500U as the ADSL modem, and the Netgear as a WiFi AP :)

@slupe: If you really want to replace the whole Netgear unit, then look at something like the TP-Link W8960N: http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/item/46936335/TP_Link_W8960N_300Mbps_Wireless_N_ADSL2_Router.html

The Linksys WRT54GL was a legendary router once you've installed DD-WRT firmware on it! Unfortunately it is still rather expensive and very outdated: no gigabit LAN / wireless N or USB and it has a slow CPU and not that much flash memory.
If you want a powerful router (not ADSL modem), then look at something like the TP-Link WR1043ND, which can also take DD-WRT firmware, and it has wireless N, gigabit LAN & USB 2.
If you're looking for even more high performance routers, then look at the Buffalo routers.

Yeah, I'm less inclined to say go with the Linksys, but running custom firmware is a must for me. Tomato is my favoured brand now since I can control per ip bandwidth etc.

You can do that with DD-WRT too, but it is way more complicated I suppose.

I prefer to use MikroTik RouterOS, because you don't have to restart the device to save the changes, and you can also configure per IP limitations.

Slupe, I posted the link to Bid-or-buy, where you can buy it from Uniterm Direct.
On Uniterm Direct's webpage it is more expensive than on bid-or-buy. Just take note that Uniterm Direct's site exludes VAT, where as bid-or-buy includes VAT.
