Hi,

Anyone had experiences with these. I was told today by HIFI Corp that they use the Samsung Panels.

Thanks

My 1st LCD TV was a 32" Byd:Sign.
I've had a for about a year and a half now without any problems - currently in my child's room being used/abused daily.
Paid R3300 for it back then - I see their prices have fallen to about R2200(on special a while back).

I say go for it if you are on a very tight budget and want something better than the old big TV's.
If money is not such a big issue rather get a Samsung Plasma 50/51" for about R7000.

Had personal experience?

Nope, I own Samsung plasma (first choice) and Samsung LCD. So only the facts that it's Hifi Corp's own in-house brand, really low quality, unknown parts, bad reports on these forums, etc.

Put it next to a Samsung/LG/Sony and you will see (especially with SD content). Pity, Samsung LA32D550 32" FHD LCD was R3,200 - R3,500 a few days ago. Might've been within your budget.

As said, when going for cheapie TVs go for Hisense, they're the king of cheapies.

There is way more than the panel to a LCD TV. Samsung/Sony have a joint panel production venture, so probably 20% of the world's LCDs use their panels. Way more to it than that though, mainly your processing engine which is superior in branded sets (like Sony's Bravia engine, think Samsung's is called Hyperreal engine, etc).

Lol, thanks guys. Have a Samsung LED as the main TV - looking for a cheapie for my room :)

I love my By:Dsign - you will see (if you google a bit) that they are a major OEM making stuff for many brand names, called "By:Dsign Technologies"

what size/price range are you looking at? what is the price/size of the byd-sign tv you are looking at?

They're "great" until you put them next to a branded set. Ask anyone who's owned a e.g. Sinotech/Logik and then upgraded to a Samsung/LG/Sony (there have recently been cases like this on the forum).

If you're only going to be playing HD content and gaming, I'd say it's a safe bet as HD looks good on most HD TV's.

SD TV/non-HD ripz are a no-no though.

Also, cheapie TVs are not as cheap as they used to be. 1 - 2 years ago they were like 20 - 30% cheaper most of the time. Now it's like 10 - 20%, pretty much since the inception of Walmart.

Go into a Hifi Corp where they have Sonys, LGs and Samsungs on display next to byDsigns and other budget brands. Other than the slimness of the Samsungs, I dont notice a massive difference. At least not a big enough difference to warranty nearly double the cost.

Brightly lit environment...ask them to turn the lights off :)

take your own source and set to "default", then you will see the difference.

You mean the difference is only visible under ideal conditions? Wow, thats great. Pay R4000 extra for something you can only see in the dark at default settings using material you know well. Great. Definitely worth it.

You have it the wrong way around - the screens are only comparable under ideal conditions... is your lounge lit up by 20 LCDs and florescent lighting?
