Bye bye Iburst and Hello ADSL

... I don't get excited about free email accounts and free websites.

WHAT??? You don't get excited by free porn??? :D

Seriously though, WTF? I simply asked something about retaining my current email address, as I'm not lus to go though the schlepp of sending everyone a notification I'm changing etc.

On a side note though, how do you think Gmail/Google knows what adds to display on your Gmail page? Of course they scanning your PC etc. That's a little scary.

LOL.

You may be able to if you keep iBurst prepaid- buy a few bucks worth of credit and keep that for x months?

It's not that they're scanning your PC, or your hard drives, it's that they scan incoming and outgoing email. This affects not only you but everyone who sends email to you. Google is a search engine advertising business. That's their bread and butter. They scan your emails and unless you're careful - also have your website history via Google search engine and the various Google ad hosting solutions websites use - they track you. They've also not said anything about clearing your deleted mail out. There are serious privacy concerns there.

Google's cellular service is similar. Their android phones capture data about you and what you do and that can be used to offer you advertising but at the same time you're just another sheep at the mercy of a big, foreign company which doesn't want to offer assurances of privacy. MWEB on the other hand does not scan your emails. They're not a search engine advertising business. Their customers PAY them to host email there. They also have a certain expectation in exchange for that payment - that the service works reasonably. GMail is free and as such you can't expect anything back from them.

Remember: For google, the customers are not the email users but the companies which buy targeted ads. The email and search engine users are the commodity which is being sold. For ISPs, you're the customer. Is that worth a few bucks to you? Perhaps not, but then don't say that Gmail is better.

Beyond that Gmail is free but it's not more special than say hushmail or hotmail.

So I'm not against Gmail per se, but I am against fan-boy opinions which say without any conclusive proof that gmail is the best email provider - because for me that's not the case. I've already stated why.
