I've finally done my application for Telkom line, so hopefully in about 4 weeks I can dispense with my I-Burst. Yay! No more slow speeds, no more dropping signal in lightning storms. It's been an interesting 4 years. There have been good times and there have been bad times, but I suppose, there was more good than bad overall.

What I would like to know though, is can I retain my Iburst email address in any way? Really don't want to lose that, as I've had it for years and will lose plenty of emails as a result of losing the addy.

Register yourself for a GMAIL address, its compeltely free, and the best email service on the planet.

Do this immediately, while your iBurst account is still active - log in to the web interface of your iBurst email account, and set up an auto-forward, so that all your emails are auto-forwarded to your new GMAIL address. Also set up an auto-responder that states:

Hi. Please note that I am phasing out usage of my my email address [email protected], as this email account will be deleted on 1 April 2010. Please update your records and your address book immediately to reflect my new email address, [email protected].

After the 1 April 2010, you will only be able to reach me on my new email address - [email protected], and all emails sent to the old email address - [email protected] - will bounce.

Thanks.
Kind regards
XXX XXXX

Then, also send an email to your entire address book, asking them to update their address book and records as well. Update your internet banking and other online services with your new gmail address. Update all your forum registrations with your new email address. Do this ASAP before your iBurst account get's cancelled.

Then wipe your hands clean off ISP email addresses and stick to GMAIL in the future!

DON'T try to hang on to your ISP email address. It's a big pain in the ass. You've got sufficient time to phase your iBurst email address out... But start doing it today...

Gmail is hardly the BEST email service. It's also hardly the BEST FREE email service.

How much would 5GB international and 30Gb local, with 1Mb/s speeds (line rental included) cost?

Telkom level 3 which is 5gb int and 30gb local is abt R554 incl 4mb line. then add another R130 for the telkom line rental(the actual physical line to you house)

I believe SAOL have the same as the above, at R554, but with 50GB or 60GB local, instead of 30. I don't see it on the phone, but they quoted me on the phone on Saturday...

I would completely disagree with you.
Gmail is by far the most amazing service on the planet and it is free with tons of storage, I use it as a document file server.

And you've used them all and compared them?

Gmail is a free, ad based system. It's a decent free email service, but there are better ones. The fact that its free automatically makes the user look like a cheapskate and less trustworthy than someone who uses an ISP email or his own domain. Even the empty domains are dodgy - but ISP or a domain based system from a reputable domain is better.

Dude... what are you smoking?

Ad-based? I don't get ANY ad's on any of my emails. Either on outgoing or incoming emails. I have GMail set up in MS Outlook, and on my mobile phone. I have emails stored from 2006! I can access GMail's SMTP and POP servers without having to pay a cent. I can access gmail on my mobile by installing the GMail application on my Nokia phone, or by setting it up via POP & SMTP servers, or by visiting the GMail mobi site. Gmail supports all the security protocols, like SSL, TLS, encryption etc. Gmail supports IMAP folders.

The GMail web interface is revolutionary. Searching for a particular email doesn't get any easier than this. And I get 8GB of email storage for life, for free, and it is constantly growing.

Sure my email is [email protected], and not on a custom domain, but I don't really care. Now if I really did want a custom domain, I could still use Gmail and get my own custom domain - using Google Apps.

You can use your Google email address as an OpenID as well. Don't know what OpenID is? Read here for more info. It basically means that for any website that supports OpenID, I can login using my Gmail account details. I don't need to register another user account or have to remember yet another password.

GMail's SMTP. POP and IMAP servers are open and accessible on almost all ISP networks (obvisouly requires authentication). Other ISPs SMTP and/or POP/IMAP servers are only accessible on their own networks (iBurst, Vodacom, MTN, some of WebAfrica' servers, SAOL, Cybersmart, etc), and are blocked on most other networks. Just read these forums to see all the problems people have with ISP email accounts.

That is why GMail is the best email service in the world.

If you disagree, please provide proof. I bet you can't even name ONE email service that can match all of the above, nevermind beat it.

I have a lot less respect for people using ISP email addresses, because to me they appear to lack intelligence. There's nothing worse than seeing somebody spend a fortune on branding and advertising for their company, only to see them use an email address like [email protected] or [email protected] and see it on their stationary. Now that is cheap!

People who use ISP addresses always come accross is less intelligent to me. As soon as I see someone with an ISP email address, I know they are definitely not technology-driven/aware people, and will use whatever comes first and is the easiest, but not necessarily the best solution. You can spot a noob by his email address.

For personal email accounts, why would you want to register your own domain name and link a single email address to it?? That's just absurd! Imagine if every user on the planet had to register their own domain simply to have a nice domain name in their email address? We already have enough information litter on the internet..

Also, if you use an ISP email address, then you are bound to that ISP for as long as you use/need your email address. I have clients who who still have email addreses from the days of dialup, with ISPs like Global, Icon, Netactive and Worldonline. All those ISPs were bought out eventually, most of them by Mweb. Now my client don't use MWeb for any of their internet access or internet products, but they are still paying them about R150 per month just for email. Totally insane.

So now I ask you, what happens when your ISP goes bust? Say they don't get eaten up by a larger ISP, but just close doors and shut down completely. Now you've lost your email address completely, and have to start from scratch. If you use a free email service (like Gmail, Yahoo mail, Hotmail) etc, which are owned by large, global, reputable enterprises, you're guaranteed to never lose your email address.. There is no reasonable explanation for keeping and using your ISP email address.

Part of the reason why I didn't sign up with Cybersmart, even though they have pretty good ADSL deals, is that you are FORCED to use their sucky email address. There's no two ways about it. You simply HAVE to use it..

ISP email addresses suck donkey balls. Gmail rules! End of story.

Not necessarily. I had a altavista email address in days gone by. It was free, revolutionary for its time and is now non existent.
