Hi, fml.

My Phone\ADSL\Fax line was just stolen for the 4th time (literally 20 minutes ago, saw the cable wobbling from my bedroom window, heard a snap and watched it fall to the ground) Called the cops, reported the theft to telkom etc etc etc.

They're probably not going to replace the cable again, I hear it costs ridiculous ammounts. My long life of ADSL gaming and sweet internet browsing is over.

I've asked why Telkom can't install new cables and do anything to make them more theft-proof, but apparantly this is impossible? Or too expensive? Does anyone else suffer from regular cable theft? Have you taken any steps on your own, within your community to prevent cable theft?

I game alot online and I fear its all over. Whats the best wireless service to go for? Neotel?

I'm so sad right now.

GG, criminal pieces of %#@(%ing dog%#%. I hope you rot in %#%#ing hell for the rest of your %(#^ing lives and people find you and burn you alive like that story on the news recently about those 3 guys who stole some power cables.

Hear that the rural community close to Centurion, Pretoria is without
ADSL due to 1.5km of cable stolen, the community had alarms on the cable
in sections which did help, but was alas too much and the thieves got away with
too much cables this time for Telkom to replace. I believe a WiSP is offering services

voiDude, do you live close to someone with ADSL and can you see their house? (no trees or buildings in the way, less than 10km away)

If so, ask him if you can split the cost of his ADSL and share, then put up a Wifi link between the two of you.

Buy two of either of these and put one up on each house:

or
http://www.scoopdistribution.co.za/product_info.php?cPath=101_110&products_id=1025

It will cost you, but if you get a decent quality link it will only add 1 to 5ms latency to your link. Not perfect, but whatever you do, STAY AWAY FROM NEOTEL, IBURST AND 3G :)

Oh, option B is to ask telkom if you fall in WiMax coverage area.

PM me if you need any more info.

Buy 20mm conduit and bury it 500mm underground through your garden all the way to the telkom pole. Put a draw wire in and pull through twin flex or multicore "scoobi" wire. Your telephone line runs on 40VDC so it'll be fine. Strap it to the pole and crimp it on your side and join it with the left over telkom wire from their pole, or ask them to terminate it for you.

The plundering "havenots" will continue until there are nothing left.

It's sad to even discuss such a thing, it's pretty embarrassing to have people steal telephone cables just to make some money, I'm sure if you told someone from overseas about this they would think that you are making a joke... :wtf:

Stealing cables is still mild compared to bridges being stolen in some parts of europe.

I am in the same predicament - currently sourcing various wireless service providers. The problem is the price of the damn service makes it practically unaffordable.

I supported Telkom for 25 years and when our cables were stolen for the first time in that many years they gave me the royal solute:wtf:

Try Amoeba. And you can run MWEB uncapped over it. There is a thread on it somewhere here and google is your friend

Awesome replies guys. I think I'm in a good area cos I can jam sc2 over bnet on 3g lol. Problem is 3g is expensive and I cant support my sick download habbits.

Thanks Guantanamo, Amobia seems decent - I'll try hunt that thread down. In the mean time, what are the benefits for going from Amobia throught to Mweb instead of just applying for, say, a 2mbps wireless uncapped connection directly to Amobia? (And skip out Mweb?) Are there any benefits? Disadvantages going straight with Amobia?
