Cable thief electrocuted

Yes I agree with what you are saying all the way.
I would rather have less potential criminals than thousands stealing cables for now and then later switching over to harder crimes. That's all.

Off course one would rather have them stealing cables than killing you. That's a given. :D

Mr. Peter C... please stop spamming teh fscking thread..please... this is not prophecy or any of the other forums you've been on.

The guy is guilty of a misdemeanour not
of a violent crime
This is not your beloved US of A this is South Africa, our law system AFAIK does not work like that.

So you prefer sitting without power for 14 ~ 36 hours and watching your food rot in the fridge before your eyes and losing R60k a day of business thanks to the cable thief? That's really interesting

Hmm throwing insults around are you?

I won't respond to you, except to say that any prudent person who runs a business should have insurance, if they risk 60K/day in damages.

Man, that’s why my insurance went up again….. Ever heard of the Darwin awards? I hope he didn’t have any offspring before he was electrocuted, really don’t need idiots like that in the gene pool.

And you have no proof that he did not commit any other crimes. I'm merely reminded of instances where you hear that they caught some criminal and he was wanted for a long list of crimes...
I doubt that the profile of a cable thief limits him to just cable theft that's all I'm getting at.
For all I know this was his only offense. But I don't think he would have stopped at cable theft.

Also I never said that I approve of the way he died...if hes even dead.

Most likely out on R200 bail ........

My neighbours have been waiting three years for the savage, that broke into their home and violently accosted them, to appear before a judge, and until this happens the police are keeping their the ceremonial sword the dirty bastards used, as evidence.

We need this scourge to come to an end, and my preference is a horrible violent end, just like the prick in this story.

I hope you're not referring to me. I'm not condoning any criminal
activity but I am saying that the punishment this guy got is far
worse than the grade of crime he committed. People say that
it serves him right but from my POV this guy was probably a simpleton
who probably did not have access to an AK47 or wasn't involved
in violent crime. You know these organised gangs which hijack cars
or invade homes, they're not stupid morons. This guy I bet
was the type who'd probably steal your washing. Yes its
inconvenient but I don't think he should get the death penalty
or be scarred for life for what he did. He should have been locked
up, I agree, made to do labour to repay the damage he
caused but that's it. Anyway that's my POV, people don't need
to get angry over this. This is a forum for goodness sakes
where people comment all the time.

Absolute bollox is what you just said. Most sane people would
disagree with you too. Maybe you advocate a death penalty for all
crimes then eh?

I doubt you represent most sane people. Most sane people, most people who are into civic responsibility and obedience are sick to death of things like cable theft.

Think bigger than the act of cable theft itself, think about the possible repercussions of this act and related acts on a grand scale because HELLOOOOOOOOO it is happening on a grand scale.

Eg1:The cables powering the street lights in a road get stolen. Someone gets hijacked and killed because it was an ideal dark place for this to happen.

Eg2:The cables powering a rural clinic get stolen and the backup genny runs out of diesel. A premature infant in an incubator dies as a result.

Should I go on?

By that logic we should be executing - or at least giving life sentences to all criminals, even tax evaders (tax loss means less money for the police
and hospitals). Yes most sane and reasonable people would agree with me because I don't believe someone's life is worth some inconvenience or monetary loss.

By the same token if the guy stole the cable and a baby died in a clinic, then he should be held accountable for that too but
in a court of law. We can't blame this simpleton if our justice system and police are ineffective.

Vigilante system anyone? Kangaroo courts? Necklacing? Civil war?
Remember also ESKOM is already doing a cr.ppy job of providing electricity
regularly. Chances are these power failures occur all the time. We don't
go and hang the ESKOM board now do we.... of course not, we give them a bonus.

I feel for your loss and your frustration but I don't think this guy's crime
justifies a death sentence (even a self imposed one).

i think the general law goes " as jy dom is moet jy k@k " " if your dumb you gotta be tough "

This all reminds me of that smash and grab kid who go shot awhile back, seems that he has not done any further crimes lately, so I guess that the shooting worked.

FWIW, I agree with, PeterCH - I think that too often on this forum people are ecstatic that criminals are hurt or killed. Yes, they are wrong, but not every crime deserves death or disfigurement as a punishment.

I doubt you represent most sane people. Most sane people, most people who are into civic responsibility and obedience are sick to death of things like cable theft.

Well, I'm sane, and I agree with him. Oddly enough, I'm also sick of cable theft. I don't condone cable theft, and I agree that it can have consequences ranging from cold suppers, lost revenue, economic damage, and yes, even accidents (although hospitals should have gennies for their life-critical equipment).

But even so, I don't think death or disfigurement is a fair punishment. You don't seem to realise that you can strongly not condone the act without requiring that degree of punishment.

And while it might be somewhat selfish and ignoring the bigger picture, I'd rather have a cold supper because some guy stole a cable than be robbed and raped.

You know, I'd rather thieves stole cables than hijacked cars, invaded homes and
robbed cash in transit vehicles. Yes he could have started a fire and killed other
people, but otherwise at least this criminal did not resort to violence to get
his money. I'd say it's a pity he got injured so badly.

Should this not read so lightly?

Thats exactly where we are heading, due to the lack of Policing and justice.
to be honest, to get SA anywhere close to acceptable crime levels, we would need to implement some rather drastic measures to get things back in line. Failing that, we will see the above (some of it is already happening in townships, but the media doesn't deem it worthwhile to publish...)

We don't
go and hang the ESKOM board now do we.... of course not, we give them a bonus.

What you have there is legalised robbery, eg stealing while using your position to facilitate such. There is very little the public can do about it, and it's happening everywhere, most levels of government, police, defence force, railways, SAA, Eskom etc etc..

it's the last death bellow of the Mbeki regime, come June next year I guarantee you that a hell of a lot of the current fat cats will be given a boot, and they are aware of that, so plundering everything while they are still in a position to do so is considered fair african game. Sad thing is they will be replaced by a starved/hungry bunch, so any prospect of improvement is already down the drain...
