I bet his brother is the chap that cut the branch off the tree that he was sitting on while stealing wood.

Cable thief electrocuted

A man, aged in his twenties, was electrocuted and critically injured while allegedly trying to steal a high-voltage electrical cable from a building in the Johannesburg CBD, Emergency Management Services said on Saturday.

Spokesman Percy Morokane said the man was injured just before midnight on Friday at the corner of Delvers and Kerk streets.

The building almost caught fire due to the incident, said Morokane.

The man suffered serious burn wounds to his upper body. He was stabilised on scene and taken to the Johannesburg General Hospital.

"Those who are involved in these criminal acts (cable theft) face death or the prospects of life-threatening injuries and life-long physical disfigurement every time they are engaged in this criminal activity," Morokane said.
But they sure a hell don't face being caught, arrested and prosecuted.

Saw pictures once of a cable thief that was fried. Not a pretty sight. He deserved what he got.

I've also seen such pictures - some time ago when the dumb ones sawed into an oil filled HV cable running under the N1 near the "Acasia Park" HV yard.

The fact that this one is still living may be a blessing in disguise - he can be used as advertising to deter other, but then again the "others" are too clever to learn.

You know, I'd rather thieves stole cables than hijacked cars, invaded homes and
robbed cash in transit vehicles. Yes he could have started a fire and killed other
people, but otherwise at least this criminal did not resort to violence to get
his money. I'd say it's a pity he got injured so badly.

True but a criminal is still a criminal, he's hardly innocent.

Most likely he would have stolen from you the next night. :(

I'd rather someone steal some cable than have someone come at me
with a gun or a knife. And no, death is not the appropriate
punishment for theft. I only give on the grounds that the guy
could have started a fire, if such is possible or injured someone
else by leaving exposed LIVE wires lying loose. Still such dangerous
behaviour would never be punished by death - not in the last 100 years.

There's enough thugs around who shoot, rape and assault people.
At least this guy chose a method of crime which was non-violent.

Absolute bollox. Death is a perfectly suitable end to him especially by his own doing.

Absolute bollox is what you just said. Most sane people would
disagree with you too. Maybe you advocate a death penalty for all
crimes then eh?

Do you really think this bloke limits his activities to just stealing cables?

I would not be surprised if his repertoire included

*Mugging
*House Break-Ins
*Smash and Grabs

I don't say that the way he died was appropriate.
All I'm saying is that I'm glad there is one less criminal loose.

You have no proof of that. The guy is guilty of a misdemeanour not
of a violent crime. They don't mention that he assaulted anyone during
the process of committing this crime.

By your logic we should put all criminals away or execute them,
even for tax evasion or jaywalking or speeding. You never know
a businessman who lies on his tax return could also be a violent criminal.

do you still have them, like to see it:D

And you have no proof that he did not commit any other crimes. I'm merely reminded of instances where you hear that they caught some criminal and he was wanted for a long list of crimes...
I doubt that the profile of a cable thief limits him to just cable theft that's all I'm getting at.
For all I know this was his only offense. But I don't think he would have stopped at cable theft.

Also I never said that I approve of the way he died...if hes even dead.

Thankfully we have the concept of innocence until guilt is proven.

Just because someone stole something (like probably everyone on this
forum at one stage or another, eg copied a copyrighted program or
music or cheated a bit on their taxes) doesn't mean they usually rape or
kill or assault other people for reward.
