Call costs hover as profits soar

One mistake. the changes are from August not July. but aside from that a decent summation of the situation. as they say in the classics. We be stuffed.

This, he warns, is not in the country’s best interests.,,
They have a clear and present responsibility to make telecommunications more affordable to all South Africans.

Wake up man, its blatantly obvious that Telkom or the DoC for that matter couldn't give a damn about what is in the best interests of the 'country'.
Best interest for themselves as individuals maybe but the country, haha.

I have to agree with Arthur Goldstuck here. The government is renowned for debating about issues for months at a time, with no notable results. Ridiculous expensive telecoms have been a burning with the public since forever.

I get the impression that the government treats the public as one would a whining child. If you ignore it long enough, it stops whining and moves on to something else. But we are not children now, aren't we!
In this case government hopes that if it ignores the complaints long enough, they would just "go away".

Ag man, Telkom makes everything as expensive as it can, then goes and lowers its prices by a ridiculous 12%, and expects everyone to go "Fenk joe!". Worse is that they go out and actively market their MASSIVE reductions. It's all baboon psychology.

The networks and the government have one thing in common, they are insensitive towards South Africans and are both responsible for the economic downfall of the country.

Well if you look at past business models for africa its the way they do it, get as much profit as possible and then leave when it hits the fan. I think Telkom are doing just that & waiting for competition or someone to spank it.

In the end it really is the gov's fault. They allowed the monopoly, they continue to protect it and for some reason we always blame Telkom when in fact we should be protesting the gov. Heck they openly said they protecting their investment.. how much clearer can they make it.

I am supprised though that people in SA haven't fought the gov with this issue then again they have done a good amount of talking about the issue making it seem they working on it and unless we all show the gov that enough is enough, they will continue as always ignoring us. Look at the Aids debacle and that is with protests. Sucks to be in SA :(
