Call forwarding/diverting, does it use airtime?

So I found out that if i run out of airtime on my phone the call forwarding doesnt work any more.


Its a MTN prepaid number forwarding to a MTN top up number.

You pay for the forward at standard rates, only if you forward incoming calls to your voicemail is the call free.

Apologies, I'm not online much. The 2 previous posts have summed it up- think of it like someone dialling you and you are redialling someone else, it's charged for.
