Call from Dial-Up, no answer, scam?

I received about 3 calls from a home phone number this morning...
when they call, i just hear a few beeps, but when i call them back, I get the sound of a dial-up connection... weird no?

I don't wanna sound too paranoid but could this be a hacker routing through my number? Maybe wanting the voice for an account or something?

Who thinks I'm crazy? Any explanations?

Try dialing-up with that number.

It could be a scam thats making me pay major bills?

Not maybe a fax machine trying to call you? 3 retries sounds about right.

The few beeps sound like a fax machine trying to establish a connection, so is the 'dial-up' tone you're getting when calling back.

It was bound to happen some time.

With the R300 Telkom special one can easily setup a fax server to wardial landline numbers during callmore hours and hunt for fax numbers. When all the numbers from 000 000 0000 to 999 999 9999 have been dialed you end up with a list of ALL known fax machines in South Africa. Then the spam faxes will start arriving...
