The Fuel Retailers' Association is drumming up support among its members to lobby the government to put pressure on oil companies to close service stations at night.

Soaring fuel costs and low gross income margins for service station owners are behind association chief executive officer Peter Morgan's efforts to garner unanimous support for closing garages at night.

For those who missed the petrol restrictions of the 70's and for those who remember them, we seem to be reaching that point again.
What fun :(
 
I think a garage owner should do as he pleases. If the station is making no money during late hours and is in risk of danger, its his right.
 
I agree

I doubt most people ever use a petrol station after 9PM at night anyway.

For Some it might be worth it, for some it won't.
 
As long as it is left to individual choice and not mandated that all have to be closed at night.
 
How is this supposed to help? How does it save money? All I see is more people losing their jobs?
 
If they close the stations at night thy will just blow up the atms that are there :(
 
What happens when you driving down to Cape Town, and you need fuel, or a pit stop?

I haven't figured out how to make 95 octane from wood yet...

It would be up to owners discresion and national and very active ones would obviously stay open. Its not gonna be some law, so relax people.
 
Seems like they wanna increase the murder rate of the country :confused: ! this is the most backward government I have ever seen ! wot about people that work night shift who needs to travel to work or people that work till really late who has to travel home from work !

They could, err, fill up their tanks early morning or late afternoon.
 
The safety of the workers on night shift should be looked at with more and stories of people filling their cars and driving off and this is happening at night, so maybe it should be up to the owners of the stations.
 
My family owns a Shell petrol station.

First of all, Shell likes to boss them around and say what they can and cannot do despite the fact that they own the garage outright! Most of these oil companies act like big bullies.

Second of all, they hold up the garages late in the afternoon most of the time. The incidence of incidents during the night have been low compared to the hold-ups and armed robberies which tend to take place either in the morning or during the afternoon rush-hour.

I remember the petrol restrictions of the '70's

People do drive with lower amounts just before an increase in fuel price.

And people do drive through the night - it's safer in a lot of respects.

Leave it up to the service station to decide if it wants to stay open but service stations long the highways don't have any choice.

Yes - it will cost jobs. But it will also save money - paying someone to be there to maybe fill a car an hour is a waste of money.

Why lobby for this? Because the guy who IS closed will lose business to the guys who are open. Silly, yes. But there it is.

And to the people complaining with silly reasons like "what if I need fuel in an emergency" etc, sheesh - this country has PLENTY to complain about without making up weak reasoning. Ask me, I am a complainer of note.
