Calls for R4 500 minimum wage

2 months holidays, 27 grandparent's funerals, christmas bonus, taxi money....

You are forgetting the 3 parents as well as the 2 siblings, and 7 children a week that die, all of which requires Family responsibility leave you know. They will also need a burial allowance because of course the R4500 can't even begin to cover the fees.

Well PSL soccer players have a minimum wage of R20 000. Or is it now R30 000? Let me check. BTW R4 500 is not bad for both sides

Ummm wtf does that have to do with the price of eggs?

I run a business, granted I don't employ anyone just yet, but if I have to pay someone a minimum of R4500 for a job, I will outsource the work overseas where I will get better productivity for less money.

That's 28 Rand per hour based on 160 hours - I mean really, what is wrong with this? Most of you guys blow 4,5K a month on luxuries (waiting for the "but I worked hard for it" comments to fly). What Vavi does not get is that at the moment companies hire 3 people at 1,5K each because their productivity is poor. If you get paid 4,5K workers will face completely different expectations from employers.

The bigger issue for me is that unskilled labour is getting as much as entry level office jobs.

Thats the issue..

At R4500 I would expect decent productivity from the person, and they would be expected to be able to do a lot of things without guidance.

Well if the business is making huge profits, and can handle these expenses, why not.It shouldnt be set in stone though. Some businesses wont be able to handle those wages.Im just saying you cant be saying its ridiculous if the business can pay those wages and still be left with huge profits.

Actually you can...

the profitability of a business should not determine the lower end of its employee bases salary. As much as that sounds like a noble thing, it just won't work.

It's not that there's anything wrong with it.

It's the face that you can't simply INSTANTLY change the minimum wage and expect any existing business to just absorb the cost.

Which means businesses won't even try to absorb it and therefore people will get fired, or those who try will ultimately fold a few months later.

It's the knock on effect that is the problem.

Like someone else alluded to, people who work at minimum wage already take massive chances with sick leave or just don't adhere to the leave policy and simply don't rock up for weeks and then expect their jobs to be there when they get back etc.

The topic title should be changed to "Calls for massive increase in unemployment"

that means student won't be able to do part time jobs anymore..
