Calls for R4 500 minimum wage

Honestly an issue I'm torn in two about. On one hand, there is no way I could afford my kids' nanny that even though she looks after the most important people in our lives.

On the other, I remember living on 4k a month, I could barely do it living in a township and transport.

But this is unaffordable, I pay around 3k as it is!

I think plenty of people would like to pay this, but the economic realities don't give a toss about what people would like to do.
 
And the unemployment rate will skyrocket. He is on his way out following the possible corruption charge and wants to look like the good guy - this is my opinion.

Maybe people take chances because they don't get paid very well and do work on the side?

Our gardener gets 200 for the day and works 4 days a month. Our domestic get's the same and works 3 days a week - both (Zimbabweans) manage to do everything in half a day compared to our locals who will take a whole day and still not get the work done.

The only problem I do see with raising minimum wage is that the working class is mollycoddled by the government irrespective of performance/productivity. I do think the government should fill the tax-divide by either introducing tax for everyone earning an income or raising VAT (and reducing personal income tax).

Sometimes I think that's exactly what they want and looking at the state of most African countries I'm not really surprised.

Which is fine considering that they generate revenue directly.
However a domestic worker or gardener adds value but does not generate any revenue for their employer so passing a blanket minimum wage law will not be viable in many cases.
 
Considering the cost of living, it does not seem exorbitant to me, as long workers understand that they have to WORK for it.
 
That comment about capitalists made me wonder, business owners, would you rather

a) Make R2x profit while your workers are barely scraping by on minimum wage or
b) Make Rx profit and pay your workers more

Unfortunately that always depends on what the value of x is, and what kind of return the shareholders are expecting.

If x is R100000 per month for a small business, then fine pay the workers more, but if x is R100000 per month for a large corporate, then you need to cut costs to increase profitability or shareholders will be unhappy.
