I'm not from there, but saw this on HelloPeter from Renault HeadOffice. Just wondering why?

The Complaint:

My Clio3 cambelt broke at 68000km. Renault SA and other Renault dealers confirmed that the cam belt must be replaced at 30000km intervals if operated in the Rustenburg area where I live. The dealership states 90 000km.

Renault's Reply:

We note your complaint as logged and advise that is standard practice for vehicles operating in the Rustenburg area to change the cambelt every 30 000km.This is done due to industrial fall out in the area that effects the lifespan of the part.

We sorry that the dealer has not informed you of this pratise and advise that we will again address the matterwith the dealer and feedback to you.

Is this on all cars?

I call Bullshyt on this.

Sure if you work on a Platinum mine and your car is subjected to the dust from the mines which hold pretty heavy chemicals sure. But the normal folk that doesn't work on a mine?

Anyway, they need to pay, the dealer and the manual says 90 000kms nothing more nothing less

I'm with Pitbull on this one. The cambelt change interval is anything between 90k and 120k km; definitely not 30 000km. The VW manuals only mention changing your filters more regularly in adverse conditions; nothing about cambelts. Maybe it's a design flaw and Renault's trying to cover up.

The question to ask is - why is only Renault affected, and not other cars?

If everybody else's cars in that same area need more regular cam belt replacement, then sure, yes. But if they can drive and have their normal replacements on the normal intervals as indicated by the manufacturer, and only a Renault is affected, then I'll *cough* call it BS *cough*

Besides, your fanbelt (which drives your water pump and alternator) is more exposed, and should deteriorate much quicker than your camshaft belt (which is enclosed in an protective cover). But keep in mind the fan belt have less stress on it than the cam belt.

But yes... would like to know what's going on here.

Also, ask some scooter owners (those with the belt-drives) whether they've started to replace their belts quicker. Scooters with belt drives also use belts which also do have a lot of stress on them.
