Oops, Dale = dslr in title

I am looking to move from a compact digital camera (olympus & sanyo) to a more advanced digital camera but not a dslr. I would like to spend in the region R5k.

Main use would be fotos of family etc.

Is it worth looking at something like the canon powershot x10 IS? I really want to try and avoid a dslr and my wife wants something easy to operate.

You thoughts would be welcome.

Check out the Panasonic FZ50. It's a bridge camera (between didital point & shoot and DSLR) with an excellent Leica lens. Could be a bit big though if it's size you're referring to.

Or check out the new Nikon P90 just got a few delivered today 24x optical zoom! Only down side no RAW function :(

The Canon SX1is which is more expensive is currently being updated to shoot in RAW mode!

And 99% of these Advanced cams have the Automatic function which essentially makes the camera a point and shoot with a nice BIG zoom :D

So do dSLRs :D

In a truly uncharacteristic move away from Canon I'm getting the Nikon P6000 next.

I've got one of these at work, I can vouch its a very good camera.

What about the Canon S5?

They were recently updated with the SX1/10 so you can get them on the cheap - about R3500 to R4000 probably. Great camera, nice zoom and there's a hack to allow you to shoot in raw.

I wont buy a panasonic camera again in my life. Dont like all the noise issues. Rather go Canon or nikon, its just better quality. Read up a lot on www.dpreview.com, most of the cameras are tested and reviewed, and compared to other in the same range.
