I want to get insurance for my cameras; lenses and other photography equipment. I'm going to add it to insurance I currently have on my car and house contents. How do I go about getting it valued ? Can a photography store give me a valuation ? How do I determine valuation amount ? What is needed for the insurance if I have to put in claim if ever necessary? (I do not have my invoices)

I have a Canon 600D with Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens and Tamron SP AF 70-200mm F2.8 Di LD (IF) Macro lens.

Nikon D3000 with 18-55mm f3.5-5.6G AF-S VR DX as well as 55-300mm f4.5-5.6 G ED VR AF-S lens.

Then I have the extras like 2 spare batteries for each camera; hoods for the lenses; chargers; camera bags; monopod and tripod;etc

I know it is only entry level stuff but I want to get it insured.

When I insured my camera, they asked that I send them proof that it was valued at +-R5000-> r6000.

At that time it was easy. I got Game and another store to email me the price for the model I had.

I have no idea how you would need to go about having the older items valued.

Just get quotes for a similar model and give that to the insurance. To claim, you just need a case number (I'm assuming theft).

I emailed ORMS with a list of my stuff and they very quickly responded with a quote. Thank you Stephen from ORMS !

I would have actually under insured my stuff if I took my own figures for the replacement values.

I've insured my equipment with outsurance. What they want to know is how much you wish to value the equipment for, regardless of how much you paid for it. So, if you purchased second hand equipment and obviously paid a fraction of the price, they will ensure it to the value of a new item (model, functionality, etc, but you have to be realistic on that figure, because if you value it higher than the current replacement model, you'll be wasting your money per month.
Easy answer, insure your equipment at their replacement value.

Hey All,
sorry to bump this old thread instead of opening a new one.

Can someone advise what camera insurance only per month cover would be?
I'm heading to some pretty dodgy places this month to shoot for a friend and would have peace of mind if covered .

The last time I applied for insurance, I was given a ridiculous quote of like R140 a month.
This is for a Canon 650D , all and all valued between 5-8k.

Any advice please?

I take it you don't have household insurance?

Against better judgement I was going to suggest looking at Art Insure but luckily I had a look at their site first - they charge minimum premiums of R298 monthly which is double your quote!

Eish! Yeah I'm living with a mate in his grandma's house and its covered.
But for me to add on to the monthly premium will be complicated I guess.
I wouldn't mind paying like R50-100 a month , but like over R100 seems mental :(

I think I'm just gonna have to cancel my dodgy tours till I can get covered...

Whenever I borrow gear I just add it for that month.

Eh? I approached them and got the following reply:

Dear xxx,

Thank you for your interest in our products.

As an underwriting manager we are unable to liaise with our clients directly as we are prohibited from doing so by legislation.

We have therefore forwarded your quotation request to one of our brokers familiar with our products in order for them to assist you.

Your query has been sent to Insurance Zone, [email protected]

Should you wish to contact Insurance Zone directly, the telephone number is 011 601 8800.

Alternatively, you are also welcome to make use of your current broker should you prefer.

I have attached a “quick quote” document which can be used to obtain quotations, thereafter if the quotation is accepted, a proposal form will be required.

We trust you find all to be in order but please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any further queries.

Yours sincerely
Gail Bosch

Insurance Zone then contacted me and asked for all the details. I forwarded a list of my gear and replacement value coming to just shy of R 25,500 at the time, and the quote I got was R125/month ex VAT. That also included the following:

Accidental loss or damage of film stock to the value of R 10,000
Accidental loss or damage of portfolio to the value of R 10,000
Hired equipment coverage to the value of R 10,000
Processing loss to the value of R 10,000
Unwittingly handling stolen goods to the value of R 10,000
X-ray damage to film to the value of R 10,000

It turns out that they do have a minimum monthly, as I replied asking what it would cost if I added all of my old film equipment (no longer used and probably never will be again, but rather safe than sorry) which came to another R 6,000 and the reply I got was that pricing wouldn't change. So R 31,500 coverage for R 142.50/month and the R 60,000 in "other" protection included as well.

Oh, and my coverage includes damage (eg dropping something), loss (eg putting a lens down and forgetting about it) or theft WORLDWIDE.

The number I quoted was from their brochure.
9. Is there a minimum sum insured?
No, there is not but we do apply minimum premiums of R298 monthly.

There were too many exclusions for me when I looked at them a couple years back, specifically their security requirements while on location, which made me reconsider.

I've found that insurance for items is generally not worth it. Can certainly shop around but cellphone insurance would have cost me more than the actual phone over 2 years. We canceled it after I left school. Doubt I will ever insure anything besides a car and house contents.

Insurance isn't cheap, that's for sure, but I treat it the same way I do my hospital plan - if/when I need it, it's going to be worth it. The two repair bills alone for my 70-200 probably totaled the cost of a new lens.

Interested to know how the quotes above are so low, either under-insured or I'm getting screwed.

I'm with OUTsurance and paying around R530/pm. It's an all risk out and about cover totaling around R45000.

While it's probably considered quite high, just my telephoto costs more than 24 months worth of premiums which made me think it's actually not that bad considering it's all risk.

Sounds high. The stuff I've insured is around R80k and I think I pay around R300-00.

@bwana - what security requirements? Afaik as long as I have my camera equipment in the boot while travelling it's all good. On location I can't really find any exclusions either, and it's worldwide.

Is that with artinsure?
Specified as business or private use?
I think once you start using it for business it gets very expensive.

Ah. I don't really leave my stuff unattended. Always with me or an assistant, or somewhere one of us can see it.
