Hey all,

I've left this until the last minute, but I'm wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a camera as a gift for a 16 year old? It'd be her first camera, so nothing over the top, something entry level with room to grow.

Also, if anyone can point to any specials that are worth a look, particularly in bricks and mortar stores.

Thanks :D

The Canon SX60HS bridge camera is nice, I had a SX50 (previous model) that I gave to my dad and it's easy to get stunning shots with it.

If she really gets into it then get her a nice mid range DSLR and book her a camera course to teach her the basics. It really is a hobby that grows on you!

If in CPT, go to ORMS.

What is your budget?

Sent you a PM. I've got a barely used Panasonic compact/superzoom that'll put most of these bridge cameras to shame.

Sorry, very silly to not put a budget in the OP.

Budget would probably be to R5k max, and I'm in the Brooklyn area, although I can get to Jozi.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far :)

Hi Hamster, which Panasonic is that, just curious.

Yes nice option for Paddy, very versatile with great IQ

People,

Thanks so much for all the info, with a special mention to Hamster. :)

I'm going to sit tonight, and crunch the numbers based on this thread, and I guess now the search for specials begins :crylaugh:

Nice looking camera. I'm not one for point and shoots but that one would seem to tick a lot of boxes
Yeah, it's great as far as point and shoots go, got all the settings etc to play around with before you fork out more money on 1" or a DSLR/lenses.

Still available...need to go bump the thread

If you want room to grow, then DSLR or mirrorless, NOT bridge camera.

A bridge camera (also called super zoom / ultra zoom) is if you want great zoom range, sometimes great macro capability and that's it. The sensors are to small to get decent depth of field, and the low light functionality is generally lacking compared to DSLRs. You do get manual controls, but without the ability to isolate the subject with depth of field, you lose half (and in my opinion the most important part) of the control.

If she just wants to take snaps and photos of some birds and wildlife, then sure, a bridge camera will work.
I went the bridge camera route, and while it was fun, the limitations became apparent and annoying pretty quickly.

The eBucks shop has a special on a Canon (1)100D, but I am not sure as to which one it is as the title states 100D and the text underneath 1100D.

Anyway, the pic:

It is a bit of an older camera but the specs are decent and the kit lenses are ideal starter equipment for the young lass

Good deal except if the bulkiness puts her off from taking it with her.

Probably best to see if the bug bites first before sending her down the slippery slope.
