The Nikon D3100 menu is very 'pretty' and probably better if you haven't used either. All Canons - even the cheapest little baby - has the same type of menu and feel ... so I'm used to it.

I personally like taking HDR photos - so I'd never get the 3100 myself. Assuming it could do AEB, I'd probably take a long look at it!

hahaha well i dont know if you live in durban, so that cant be a selling point :)

some people say the menus on the nikon are friendlier than the canon are, ie easier for a beginner to navigate.

canon 500d compared to a nikon d3100?
Maybe but navigating the Canon menu system isn't rocket science and you soon learn what is where. All my regularly used menu functions are assigned to the quick menu anyway.

I've read that, and perhaps the Canon menus are more confusingly laid out, but I regularly find myself wondering why Nikon has a setting in a particular place. What the low end Nikons do have going for them is effectively having a reference guide in the camera, so you can read what a function does without consulting the manual.

Nikon's other entry level camera, the D5000, has it as do all the canons.
I'm simply conjecturing that Nikon left it off because the reality is that it is a little used feature for their target market. It seems unlikely they deliberately removed a critical feature that everyone would want.

Oh and for those thinking Nikon is the best... have a look at their customer service record on Hellopeter.com.

I don't trust a thing that is said on hellopeter. A lot of complaints on there are dodgy. At least Nikon replies to the complaints on hellopeter and they have turned a few frowns upside down. Canon is M.I.A. and have more complaints (though some are about printers)

haha really glad I didn't bite the bullet and buy the canon on the promo as Incredible now has the 500D twin lens kit for R6999
