Hi-fi Corp has a 10% off all cameras' for the next 4 days. I was going to get the D3100 twin lense kit(18-55 + 55-200). Normal price is R6999, so should pick it up for around R6300. BUT!!! Some idiots cloned my credit card and STD bank has frozen my bank account for the next 3-4 working days till they complete investigations. I am so......

Take it as a sign, the big photographer in the sky doesn't want you to buy Nikon. :D

Hope they get your new card to you in time! :)

That sucks!

I am keen on going to pickup a canon 500D twin lens bundle kit while the special is on, I have been wanting to get an SLR for some time but just don't know if I can justify it, I take pics for work regularly frequently with a regular digital camera and take the odd snap with the GF's digital cam when we are out and about.

bwana.... why wouldnt u buy the nikon d3100?

I have heard its one of the best entry level / beginner slr cameras u can get.

What would u recommended?

I don't see anything on their site about this 10% off special.
Do you maybe have a link or more info?
Is it just cameras or might I be able to grab a lens or camera accessory for 10% off too?

Its on the back page of their recent catalogue. Valid for 4 days only from 17 March 2011.

It lacks Auto Exposure Bracketing which means that doing HDR is much more complicated than it should be.

As the bottom of the range camera you might find ourself growing out of it sooner than you would like, which is kind of the point of it as far as the manufacturers are concerned I think. :o

Spend a little more, get a little more.

That is why I stick with Canon... even the entry level model has AEB

Maybe a lot of users of entry level cameras don't use it.

I do.
Problem is my D3000 doesn't use it.
:(

Like Bwana says... Anyway, I'm already looking at solutions (only option now is manual shooting at diff exposures, and software manipulation).

Should have listened to Bwana..
:o

I don't even have an SLR and use it.

Doubt I'd get a camera that can't do it :/

Btw - Hi Fi Corp grey still? Or warranty through Canon/Nikon?

Not grey.
I checked a lens's serial number with Nikon, and it was legit.
Either way, both are awesome.
:)

so bwana what camera would you recommend a person who has never owned a slr camera before?

TBH with the exception of a missing function here and there it's almost impossible to buy a bad camera these days. The best thing you can do is go to a camera shop and pick one that feels comfortable in your hands.

That said most of my friends have Canons, not because I pushed them towards them but because they can get free lessons and lens rentals from yours truly! :)

EDIT: unless of course you have a specific interest in mind - in which case one model could easily be more suited than another.

hahaha well i dont know if you live in durban, so that cant be a selling point :)

some people say the menus on the nikon are friendlier than the canon are, ie easier for a beginner to navigate.

canon 500d compared to a nikon d3100?
