This is weird... maybe it's just me... but I cannot seem to access any chat or Instant Messaging sites... are they being blocked?

I can't login to MSN using MSN Messenger Live
I can't get to http://www.ebuddy.com/
I can't get to http://www.meebo.com/
I can't get to http://gaim.sourceforge.net/
I can't get to http://chat.yahoo.com/

Is vodacom blocking these sites for some reason? The only one I can use at the moment is Gmail chat in the Gmail window... have not tried GoogleTalk (don't have it installed). Why does all the weird stuff happen to me? Can anyone else using 3G get to the above sites?

Did you (or maybe your parents :)) activate Adult Content Management (ACM) on your SIM/phone?

By default NOTHING gets blocked.

lol! naughty parents! hehehe... so how do I go about unlocking it... or checking if it is actually activated? I also wondered if it was something like that!

ok, here are the results of my various phone calls.

1) I spoke to Zack this morning, a 3G customer service rep... who confirmed that the ACMS had been activated. he said it had been activated "by default".. whatever that means. I told him I had never requested this service, and that someone must have activated it in the last month or so. He could not tell me who or why it had been activated, but he told me to de-activate it... I should take a copy of my ID in to a vodacom customer service center. I explained that I was on a conference several hours away from Joburg and that the earliest I would be able to do that would be Thursday afternoon. I asked him why I had to do that when I had never requested the activation in the first place. He said that is the only way to undo it. He then logged a fault, stating that I had never requested such activation and that I was "refusing" to provide a copy of my ID (I was not refusing, I am just not able to do so until Thursday afternoon). He said someone would contact me. I received an SMS shortly after that telling me the same thing... I must fax a copy of my ID to a certain number to get the service de-activated.

2) I called customer service again and explained my problem to them, this time I spoke to Sydney. He also said he could do nothing. I asked why the service was activated without my permission. He could not say. He said they have no access to the ACMS from their side. He put me back through to customer service.

3) I spoke to another lady (I forget her name, but she was extremely rude and unhelpful).. she told me the same as the others... we don't know why it was activated... but to de-activate it you have to take a copy of your ID to a service shop. I tried to explain to her again that I never requested the service to please show me where I requested it. That I was on a conference two hours away from the nearest service center with no access to a scanner or a fax machine. That they already have a copy of my ID... and all my other info as well. I think she must have thought I am some porno freak trying to get onto adult sites... but the truth is I cannot even get to the vodacom website... the vodacom4me website... to kalahari.net... these are all legit sites that are being blocked... meanwhile I cannot communicate with my international contacts via instant messaging because that is all blocked.

so there you have it... vodacom hit a few keys sometime in the last month and activated the Adult Content Managements Service on my 3G sim, now they are telling me they cannot undo that until I have to do something which inconveniences me.

I guess I would be well withing my rights to cancel my contract right now, since vodacom is denying me the very access which I took up the contract for.

why should I have to go through the inconvenience of taking a copy of my ID to a vodacom service shop, especially when I am away from Joburg... when they were the ones who messed up in the first place?

I am sorry... but that is just BAD service!!!

Who activated it for you?:p
Maybe your wife, GF or mom saw what sites you been browsing:p

Just Kidding;)

Let's get this sorted, but first:

Is the contract in your name?

Who activated it for you?:p
Maybe your wife, GF or mom saw what sites you been browsing

Just Kidding

lol, if that was the case I would have just meekly gone and done what needed to be done without anyone knowing :D hehehe... no need to draw attention to my viewing habits :p

But the 3G packages are so expensive anyway, anyone who uses them to DL porn is a nutjob!!

I still wanna know why legitimate sites like kalahari.net are also being blocked??

I did finally find a shop on a small dusty road outside the bush lodge which had a fax machine and a copier... they faxed my ID for R6.00!!! Vodacom, you owe me R6.00 for your stupidity!... and a letter of apology would also be nice!

yes, the contract is in my name, although it is paid for by my business.

the customer service reference number I was assigned was...

AW-6Q20-G277A

thanks :D

okay, the weirdness continues...

the block has not been removed, even though I faxed my ID document before 3:30 pm this afternoon.

I still cannot access any chat sites... including the following...

http://www.mxit.co.za/
http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/ (makers of Trillian Chat software)
http://www.myspace.com/

which make sense, since the Adult Content Management Service is supposed to block such sites, and as the customer service rep told me, the ACMS HAS been activated on my account (without my request)

but I can access this site... (which I would assume should be blocked???)

http://www.playboy.com/
http://www.watch4beauty.com/
and various other "adult" sites
http://www.gmail.com/ (gmail includes chat features)

but what is even stranger is that these sites are also blocked... which have no adult content whatsoever...

http://www.kalahari.net/
http://www.vodacom.co.za/
http://www.vodacom4me.co.za/
and some sites with religious content

this makes me ask the question... Vodacom! How exactly does this ACMS actually work?

In the even years (2006, 2006, etc) we apply the correct filters, i.e. 'adult' sites are blocked.

In the odd years (2005, 2007, etc.) we have to inverse the filters to restore equilibrium to the universe. Thus normal sites are now blocked.

This will be restored in 262 days, please be patient.

(PM me your number, won't you. I'll have the engineering guys check this out. Something is obviously screwy...)

ROFL at least it makes more sense than the way telkom cap their accounts :p

aaah.... I thought it was something sinister like that! :D

I PMed you my stuff... thanks for your help! :)

Got it tx, cc'd you on the internal mails.

I saw them! Thanks :)

not sure if it has been de-activated yet... it's still acting strange. I checked my hosts file and my security settings and there is nothing else blocking.

OK, seems to be working now... so some time since last Friday they must have lifted the restriction. But I have yet to hear from anyone else at Vodacom about this... still lots of unanswered questions...

1) Why was I blocked with the Adult Content Management System in the first place? (I never requested it)
2) Why did I have to fax a copy of my ID to get it unlocked, when I was not the one who requested the block in the first place? Vodacom have all my details on file already... faxing a copy of my ID was pointless. It is not really acceptable proof (I mean... if it was really my kid who was trying to get the system unblocked... how difficult is it for him to get my ID book out of my wallet and make a copy and fax it from the shop up the road?) I think, actually talking to me on the phone was better proof of who I really was and what my desires were.
3) Why all the weird sites that were blocked? I still have not figured that out... maybe someone else can run a test and see just which sites the ACMS blocks and allows... that would be an interesting story!
4) Why no communication or follow-up from Vodacom? apart from the one young man, the middle technician I spoke to... I think his name was Sydney... who did apologise for my inconvenience and apart from V3G's help from the forum side here... I got no other joy from Vodacom. (thanks for your part V3G!)

anyway... at least it is working... but was an incredibly frustrating and pointless exercise!
