Can I access e-mail on a Kindle

If I purchase a 3G Kindle, can I access my e-mail?
Can the Kindle accept SA 3G SIM cards?

Just a more direct answer : Yes you can access email via the browser [i.e. gmail] , but you can't set up email like outlook or anything. Simply put : If a site works in a phone browser, you'll most likely be able to reach it with the kindle browser. So if you can't read your specific email in the browser [on your pc] you will not be able to read it on the kindle.

How does the 3G access pricing work? I understand that books are a bit more expensive in SA, but what about web browsing? Finally, does anyone know what network the 3G will use? Sorry for what might be silly questions, but I'm a bit lost as to Amazon's agreements with mobile operators. A device with global internet browsing for free simply sounds too good to be true. What am I missing here?

The 3G is free, including browsing. I believe Amazon and Vodacom has a deal. As for the "global internet browsing", it will only be free in countries where Amazon has a deal with the local operator..., but yea it's definitely free locally. It must be noted, the kindle IS black and white and IS a slow device when it comes to "graphics" and "rendering" . The browser also is pretty simple [kinda like a phone browser] , so don't expect watching youtube or ANY streaming or ANY flash or anything with serious amounts of scripting going. It is pretty basic.

Are you sure on this?
Only browsing of the Kindle/Amazon shop or all browsing?

As mentioned previously, I can also confirm that browsing is free from the device in South Africa. Took my Kindle to Germany and Switzerland, also free there - was awesome. The one thing I have noticed is I only get a edge connection, never seen 3G here in SA.

For email, as long as there is a mobile friendly web page you should be ok, for example http://m.gmail.com

This makes the Kindle an even more attractive option IMO. I know it's black and white and slow (after all, the whole point is E-ink!), but that doesn't really matter as it's mainly a reader. Browsing is a nice to have secondary - will allow you to quickly google background info on what you're reading. Also, I don't want to buy a R15 classic, only to later pay R10 for the browsing and downloading costs. Also, I suspect it's gong to be perpetually syncing, which would make a paid simcard a small, but ongoing, expense. All in all, free browsing just makes it easier to use.

Regarding PDFs - if google returns a pdf as a result, can I open it directly from the browser, or do I first have to download it?

Why must the email be a mobile friendly page, why not standard mail.google.com?

The kindle does not allow you to download files, I tried to download a ferry schedule in switzerland, so only basic browsing.

The Kindle has a primitive, basic browser - it does not have all the fancy flash and javascript features that your desktop browser has. If I remember correctly, when you visit gmail or facebook it automatically redirects you to the mobile version which is alot more friendly for the kindle.

Yes, can browse anywhere on my kindle.

Also as people mentioned, i have the following symptoms:

1. Only getting EDGE
2. The browser are limited to "simple browsing" , no streaming, no downloading , no any fancy things. (Everything is greyscale too)
3. The device is slow , so panning, zooming and rendering in the browser is painful.

So it's free and works, will certainly do the job if you want to look up something or read gmail, but don't expect anything fancy in the browser.

As for Gmail, you can visit the regular site, but you will most likely get a "Your connection seems to be slow, consider using the HTML ONLY version" while loading. So the HTML version works fine .
