Hi to everyone, looking for some help and advice please. Firstly apologies if this thread is in the wrong section, I honestly dont know which area this will wall under.

I am in dire need of a decent internet/broadband connection/solution. My other half works from home and we do consume quite a bit of data bandwidth, mainly due to her work, not that much for our daily use or streaming. Our current monthly usage is in the area of 600-800 GB per month. She is a media editor, the biggest data consumption is the downloading and uploading of the video files.

Without giving my direct address, we live in the Westham/Rainham area of Phoenix in Durban. Currently we are using the rain R250 uncapped package as well as MTN fixed LTE package. We, and I mean mainly myself, normally wake up in the wee hours of the morning to set her workload to download for the day. With all the congestion and recent throttling/shaping it is becoming quite unusable.

I do understand that the uncapped package isn't really meant for this, and before anyone jumps up to attack my usage, please understand that we have no other options for connectivity at our usage, with a decent price point. I would gladly pay more, within reason, for a decent capped or uncapped solution with decent speeds.

I do know that fibre has been laid in the area, along the main road. The distance to my house from the line, along the road is about 150m and straight line shortest distance is 80m.

All LTE options don't give you a usable amount of data. ADSL is not an option because TELKOM. 5G would be a godsend if it ever arrives. Fibre I would love to have.

I know we do have reps from many different ISP's on the forum. Maybe some of you would be willing to propose rollout in the area to your companies, there will definitely be an uptake.

Any advice on options and solutions welcome.

What about telkom uncapped fixed lte? Not sure what's fair usage policy on that.

If i remember correctly, the R899 package has a FUP around 350GB. The other issue is I don't think they are available any longer. Will research that now.

so i checked up on the Telkom Uncapped

  • Handset can be purchased at a once-off fee to be used with the router for voice over LTE calls
  • 300 On-net minutes included
  • 150GB data @ 10Mbps
  • Thereafter 50GB data @ 4Mbps
  • Thereafter 2Mbps uncapped data rest of month
not much data actually available.
Will be waiting to see what the rain uncapped is like, may be a good option.
Still hoping that there would be fibre or 5G in the area soon. Guessing with the virus, most rollout plans have stalled indefinitely

Any feedback from Fibre ISPs? Coverage Maps?

I'm not on any of the coverage maps. Did get contacted by 123NET. They are a fibre provider but the lady that called me said that they do not yet have line of sight to my house? They do have very poor reviews though, so i'm not sure it would be a good idea even if they do have coverage.

The problem is, desperation will make you choose a bad provider, only because its not as bad as you currently experience.

WISP?
There was no RAIN coverage in my area.
I used WISP for about 2 years until we got fibre in the suburb.
The 1st WISP was 10/10Mbps Up/Down (15Mbp burst) and was unstable (required LTE backup).
The 2nd WISP was 20/20Mbps (30Mbps burst) and worked very well (urbanwave)
The tower was about 1.8km away.

The only local wisp that we have is also suffering from congestion issues, never get the speeds that you wanted. Actual speeds less than a 10th of what you expect. Both my brother in laws have it.

Pity about the WISP.
The 1st WISP initially gave the 10/10Mbps, towards the end we suffered from congestion.
The 2nd WISP worked at the advertised 20/20Mbps rate - had a good experience with them.

This may be the reason for not having fibre:
The construction mafia been preventing fibre rollout in KZN

I dont think that is the only issue. Being in a lower LSM than Umhlanga, MT edgecombe, La lucia etc, I believe that providers dont think they can get customers in our area. Little do they know how starved we are for decent connectivity.

You and I are suffering the same fate, but lucky for me & for the same reasons of a lower LSM area, my rain LTE is great.1587225845624.jpg

In any case, try DFA.
Yes, they aren't an ISP per se, but there are ISPs that work with their infrastructure.

Thanks for all the responses guys. I have also heard bad news about 123NET @Aidan_B.

@GIGZ My RAIN LTE tops out at under 1mbps during the day.

DFA is in the area, but none of the ISP's are live. When looking at the DFA infrastructure map, that's where you see that there is fibre a few hundred meters from my door, even shorter if you look at straight line.

@ComplexnetGuy will pm.

You cannot get an FTTH connection on a DFA line.
