.. if I reserved it long ago on a computer I rarely used and only turned on the computer today to find the Windows 10 icon in the tray still there telling me 'there is nothing else you need to do, you will receive a notification...'

It is Windows 7 home premium and there are about 80 (+- 1GB) updates available (win. 10 not one of them)

One would hope though, that you can skip all the initial pain and go directly to the latest windows creator version now available for download.

version 1703 build 10563.

All the updates must be done, before 10 becomes available. iirc

got the creators edition (1703) update on another pc today b.t.w. [automatic update, not manual install]

Still on 1607..

Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.14393]

Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool for Windows 8, 8.1, 10 and Windows Server 2012, 2012 R2, 2016 x64 Edition - April 2017 (KB890830)

Security Update for Adobe Flash Player for Windows 10 Version 1607 (for x64-based Systems) (KB4018483)

Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB4015217)

Did a manual download of the new Win 10 yesterday on two PCs. No sign of the auto update at the time.

Took a really long time.

So far all is well on the Windows Front.

Can't say I have found anything that truly grabs my attention yet.

If you DL the media creation tool for Win 10 you can create the latest media for installing.
Just do a fresh install on that PC and you can skip all the updates inbetween ...
It will activate with the Win 7 key

Just done it for a die hard WIN 7 user who refused to update originally. Works fine, so OP should be able to do the same.

If you use it to Upgrade Win 7/10 does it wipe all the previous programs ?

I did a clean install for him from a USB ISO created with the media creation tool previously mentioned . All other sw and data is lost and needs to be re-installed. This was at his request. Only the sw he still uses was re-installed after the upgrade was completed. Data was recovered from a backup.

The other way is to do the upgrade via the auto update process, which will save and restore data and will keep sw previously installed under WIN 7.

Ah ok same as what I do since I upgrade to SSD anyway.

Was just wondering if that actually works without breaking stuff from old OS.

9/10 it will break stuff hell even an upgrade from Anniversary edition to Creative break stuff we talking Microsoft here. After an upgrade I normally reset the OS and install my apps afresh. At least Windows 10 made the reset part a lot easier.

I agree in principle that a fresh sw install is the better way, but sometimes it is just not possible. On a "clean install" it seems a bit silly to now "import" possible issues from the old OS into the new one. If you only have MS sw installed (MS Office) then the likelihood that anything gets broken is very unlikely.
