Hi there .

I have a problem hehe , i have a gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3L motherboard , it seems that my onboard network card has blow , i cant even detect it in the bios nether does windows want me to create a network connection because it does not find a network card and i have been having problems with my onboard sound card aswell , just sometimes doesnt work even if all the drivers are installed . Last week the weather was bad here in durban , CAN IT BE POSSIBLE THAT ONLY MY NETWORK-AND SOUND CARD HAS BEEN STRUCK or will my whole motherboard stop working . I have just reinstalled windows aswell and the new drivers for the cards , but still cant seem to work . In the meen time i have bought an 10/100mps network card and installed it and boom i have network connection .

Any comments please

Thanks

I can answer that for you from experience. Yes it can, i had the same problem about 4 months ago. I had just purchased a new rig, and had it only for like 3 months. Then outta nowhere a storm broke out in my area, and before i got the chance to unplug everything, it was hit. Later after the storm had cleared i checked to see if the pc would start. It did thank god. But my internet wouldnt work and neither would my sound. Those were the only 2 things that were blown. Thankfully everything else was ok.

So in short, yes it is possible that only those 2 things blew :)

yes, it can be damaged partially as mentioned.

It could keep working for long still or the board could start ''fading'' with time.

Yip, same thing has happened to me in the past.

Lightning took out my VOIP phone (plugged into the POTS as well as ethernet), then travelled up the ethernet to the switch, where it killed two of four ports, before travelling down the ethernet to my PC, where it killed the onboard ethernet interface.

The other two ports of the switch still functioned, and the PC was fine other than the ethernet adapter. A replacement eth adapter solved that problem, and the PC has been working fine since then.

Lightning has struck my DSL router -> Gigabit network port on PC -> Travelled through the board,to USB ports,to my Logitech mouse and zapped me

Only my arm (temporarily) and the PC network port were lost :P

OK, you win! :-)

my backup gaming rig was struck twice, the first time it wouldn't turn on for 2 days, then worked like a bomb for years,2nd strike it gave the ghost :(

REGIreaper - is the board under warranty still? If so, get a swop-out - tell them the network connection isn't working, but don't tell them there was a storm... ;)

I'm not sure if Rectron still deal with the Gigabyte range - I swopped mine out a few years ago when I had a similar problem...

I've had lightning strike my modem (taking out my phones as well), travel through the modem and blow out my firewall as well.

So now I have a (pretty useless IMO) lightning protection device on the main phone line, as well as an inline RJ45 lightning protector on the cable between my modem & firewall. At least if the modem gets taken out, the inline device should at least protect my firewall machine.

But there is nothing better than several inches of air between your phone line and the socket when there's bad weather about. :p

Yeah, the exact same thing happened to me, except in my case both the networking and USB failed.
