Can it really be this bad during office hours

My wife has been complaining that the internet speeds were terrible during the day on our 4mb/s ADSL line. Today I got home early and did some speed tests and the result on international site are shocking:

International @ 16:20 On http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

Download Speed: 624 kbps (78 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 368 kbps (46 KB/sec transfer rate)

International @ 18:20 On http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

Download Speed: 2233 kbps (279.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 382 kbps (47.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

Local @ 16:20 on http://www.gam.co.za/

Download Speed: 3453 kbps (431.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 423 kbps (52.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

The international speed is useless, sometimes she can't even log into gmail during the day, now is this what I'm paying for in a 4mb/s line???

Please can someone break the hellkom monopoly!

Ahem, can you say "best effort"? 4Mbps is not guaranteed, only what is theoretically possible. And of course there's the contention ratio as well. This is standard practice all over the world, not just with Telkom.

That was at 16:20 when it was getting better today, gmail was going ok at that stage
 
Had the EXACT problem yesterday!

Solution:
1. Get a blunt object

2. Slowly open your pc.

3. Skip this step

4. With the blunt object strike down the little red guy humping your cpu.

Seriously, i can open my gmail acount with 32kbps in less than 5min on standard view.

Actually it could yes, i have noticed sometimes during the day my noise margins are awesome during the week, but on the weekend they are terrible, thus causing a bit of line instability, this could be due to the exchange being very busy. Your other option is to ask telkom to change your port and see if that helps, i had a damaged port with my line, i also had to down sync my line to 2mbit instead of 4. You do you get frequent de-synchronizations?

...or even the line being damaged comment too should be quoted - and then I should say that I think you're talking bubbles out your exhaust pipe.

It's the same with my offices, the office next door, and I'll bet both my routers (which both perform the same) that the office next door has the same issues.
Then throw in my mates small home office across town, and it starts sounding like a throttle or bad peering to me.

Before 08:00 the line works like an ADSL line should, after that until 17:30-ish it's pretty crap for what's being marketed. It's not the line, it's not the contention (strictly speaking), but it's the Telscum bundled loop, over-selling under-utilised undersea cable IMHO.

It's not just Gmail, but the whole GMail IP-range it would seem.. search, mail analytics, youtube etc etc... that's why I reckon it's a throttle during business hours.

Using an Axxess prepaid, or IS bandwidth solves this problem... so Semaphore, do us all a favour and fix your line by getting an Axxess prepaid.
 
I have had issues with gmail where it takes longer to open that usual, but anything else flys, i play wow with unshaped webafrica, and i get pings now of around 240-260ms

You sound plausable, if it was a line fault wouldn't I also have problems locally as the fault should be on my (or close to me) side but if you look at my first post I get very good download speeds on the local speed tests but not on international.
 
It could be peering link problems (only applying to intl) like Devo said. I wouldnt say its throttling.. But then everyone would be complaining and there would be a notice, and i havnt had bad latency the last few days.
