Can I get an R9 280x, will it work with my setup?
Yes. At the same time also get a decent cpu cooler (if you don't have one already) and overclock your cpu if your motherboard supports it, use decent thermal paste.

Wonder if this won't be saver bet:

This one is more affordable and you can Voucher it
R650 for 650w (Bronze rated 80%)

I guess you've never heard of Seasonic. I bet you R50 that 520 watt Seasonic has a higher continuous power rating than that Gigabyte. Gigabyte is famous for exaggerated peak wattage numbers.
That Corsair looks ok but isn't modular.
Also you used the wrong graphics card for your calculator. The 285 uses almost half the power of the 280x.

I have wow open, a video playing, about 30-40 browser tabs opens, about 10 other applications...and I am only using 4.3GB of RAM on my windows gaming desktop. I could open several more games and still not use that RAM.
Currently looking for the difference between the 285 and 285x(looks like there is no X, it's just Tonga) in terms of power, but the wattage drop may just be enough to make it an option.
What the ****? No way, you have to be joking. I don't even get low usage like that.
Subtract 60W from the consumption readings of any R9 280X/HD7970 GHz under load. That's the usage of the R9 285, which is nominally about 190W in game loads.
I'm sitting on 13.9gb usage in my task manager. I don't even know how it got to be so high but it's nice not to worry about it.
OP, you need another graphics card. There's no way you'll get decent performance from a 550ti. Get yourself a GTX970 or R9 280x depending what you can afford. The rest really seems fine.
Add i5 2500k:
Min: 115w
Rec:165w
Add R9 280x
Min: 332w
Rec: 382w
Add 4x DDR3 Ram
Min: 341W
Rec: 391W
Add Hard-Drive and Dvd Drive:
Min: 378W
Rec: 428W
Now remove like 60w like Wesley Suggested, and it looks a lot more promising.
It bears reminding that at no point would a system like the one above actually use 428 watts of power, there's simply no regular workload that would stress the machine out that much. I doubt it would ever use more than 300 watts for gaming workloads and would probably hover around 280W.
That still doesn't mean a 585w gigabyte Odin could run it.
I kinda regret not getting R9 285 in the build I'm doing. It's not much more than the R9 270X.
I get 460w when doing a modest calculation roughly based on OP's possible set up. That was based on the 270X though so add 15W.
I also assumed he has a 120mm fan, 1 hard-drive.
I have 5 x 120mm Fans currently.
The R9 285 looks really good and shouldn't disappoint, I'm going to look at getting a 800W PSU, that should cater for everything.
Get yourself a good quality 650w or 750w and you'll be fine, heck even a good quality 500w should do, given that a 430w was recommended for the build at 7:00 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jDXbYuNf_s
People get way too big power supplies these days. All thanks to the cheap manufacturers that overstate their wattage.
A proper 500watt is enough for most mid level PCs. Maybe 600watt for really high end single card setups, and obviously more if you're going to x-fire or sli.
I'm running a XFX(Rebranded Seasonic) 550Watt myself with a 7950 and 6 hard drives.
Get a proper cpu cooler, the 2500k is a beast because you can likely clock it between 4-5ghz and keep it for a long time.Hi Guys,
What do you think of my setup for gaming, baring in mind that we are at the end of 2014.
If you think something needs upgrading in the hardware department please let me know.
