Think we need to move offices to Cape Town... this can't continue man. And they are only ****ing ober the middle class more. Over 40% in rates and taxes per litre of fuel. 40% of our salaries going to tax and then on every thing we buy 15%. So of my salary I probably only get the benefit of around 40% if not less... ffs
Yip. Move to EU/AA, pay the same amount of taxes with 10000% of the services and 2% of the stress...

My generator seems to be more reliable currently. People in our estate whined when we hit higher levels. Batteries didn't charhe enough things breaking etc. Meh, just fl'ng annoyed

People don't know how to manage things or they don't have panels or enough :).
 
Demand is higher now than during the workday. People putting on their oven, microwave, dishwasher, washing machine etc.

Residential electricity use is around 22% of ALL consumption but De Ruyter loadshedding is more at night, on weekends, and in holidays

The Generator is killing me... I can't run it every day for 4 hours. Wife works from home, 2 hours. I get home, 2 hours... wtf /scream (And that is stage 2/3 alternating as it fks my schedule so I get hit twice with 2 hours instead of once). Sometimes even 3 times. BASTARDS!
Loadshedding is crazy and crazier if it is stage 4 and upwards.
The sad reality is that we still going to experiencing it for years to come as i do not see a solution anytime soon.
 
It is a lot more complicated than looking at the numbers as has been done above.
Eskom has however failed to explain what they are doing, how they handle their planned maintenance, and when they "replenish" reserves, whatever that statement is supposed to mean.

But having said all that, it is not that difficult to work out why more LS occurs at night than during the day. I am very interested to see if the usual noisemakers can work it out ------

It is however incorrect to assume that because 6% of the available capacity comes from pumped storage means it takes 6% energy to replenish the pumped storage reserves, More energy is required to lift water back up than to simply let it run downhill through turbines.

Then we will know whether this maintenance is making any difference, and how long a maintained unit goes before breaking down.

Which should highlight how urgently we need new generation. Which would in turn pin the blame on Gweezy for dragging his feet. If his hands are tied then why couldn't he at least implement this, and blame Gweezy without really blaming him...

My belief: The ANC factions are hampering each other so that they can get the most of the pie to them themselves. They all admire Zuma, as he and his faction together with Guptas, managed to get most of the pie to themselves.
 
Evening is peak. It's not about power over time, it's about instantaneous load. Everyone getting home and turning on their stoves and geysers at the same time is a problem.

It's for pumped storage replenishment, and maybe to save OCGT diesel usage, for running those in the daytime to lessen the stage and thus LSs impact on traffic and business.

Really? I think you should offer your insights to the engineering faculties of universities as a guest lecturer. Your unique take on maintenance will cause some light entertainment. The question session may prove embarrassing to you when laughter breaks out at your answers.

Are you and the general public capable of the mathematics and commenting on the engineering principles of maintenance? I seriously doubt the general public understands how maintenance intervals are calculated and the factors that influence them.

Something maybe interesting I heard over the break was that Drakensberg Pumped Storage Scheme was at least partly developed to provide some restorative power in the event of a grid failure. The pumped storage could produce power with limited input, probably just a big generator or two and provided the upper dams were full, to energise at least one coal fired station and get that running.

Look here Mr Trying To Sound Smart On The Interwebs, increased maintenance is the reason given for load shedding and why his hands are tied. If it weren't for so much maintenance then the units would be run too hard and eventually break right? This is what we've been told.

Surely it shouldn't be too hard to paint the full picture and let people decide for themselves, instead of painting the picture you'd like them to see. Who knows, it might shed some light into the quality of maintenance being done. Heck make the maintenance schedule and details public. The more information about what's going on, the better. It's not like they have to worry about losing a competitive edge.

PS I have an honours in applied maths. Which field of mathematics or engineering are you qualified in? Since me and the general public are clueless in these fields, and you are not...

Planned maintenance means equipment that is out of service due to maintenance that was scheduled or planned. As opposed to unplanned maintenance which is emergency/unscheduled repairs. It does not mean they are planning to do the maintenance but not yet started.

As to your 6% comment...
6% less supply and 6% more demand is a 12% swing.
12% of 30GW is 3.6GW which is nearly 4 stages of loadshedding equivalent. Even if you use 20GW it's still 2.4GW which is over 2 stages.

True that's clearly to replenish reserves. But 16:00 - 20:00 is generally peak. They do after all specify the load to be shed in MW and not MWh, basically saying that instantaneous draw is the problem...
