Can someone please try and explain this email from 1970!?

Apart from my using the eraser in "Paint" to remove email details, there has been no editing of this screengrab.

Opened up my mail on the iPhone, screen flickered a bit, hung for a second or so - and that's when I noticed this email preview... Looked bizarre - took the screengrab - tried to open it, and the same thing happened, and then it disappeared. Everything continued working as it should, barring the phantom message...

Anyone seen anything like this before? Is this peculiar, or just a random coincidence?

probably the sever the mail sender uses has that date set?
 
Lauren likes your photo? Well, we don't know if it's bizarre unless we see the photo.
 
Maybe Future Cassady traveled to the past and sent an email forward in time to Present Cassady to freak her out.

Im not 100% clued up on this stuff but I highly Doubt its common but only plausable explanation the server puts a time spamp on emails sent and if the server is on the wrong date it will have that date. Not sure if this still ocurs but if the PC they were using had incorect date and they sent using outlook, that time stamp wil be used, but most mail goes through a server and i think the server time stamp over rules.

Thanks for the explanation... But then why did the "mail" disappear? Had a look a few minutes back - the DSTV mail, and FB like mails are still there, with zip in the middle... [Shrugs shoulders]...

That's nothing, I've had emails from 1601 before :D
 
Its not that surprising. Most Unix/Linux servers have the default date set as 1970/01/01. In fact, most time calculations done in many languages (java , c and c derivatives ) use this date as the base.
Basically the date and time on the sending server got borked. The mail headers contain the date.
 
The email contains all the information. Including send time etc. Your phone downloaded the email with that information and showed you 1970 when it actually received it right at that moment because the email had it's date set wrong.

The next time you opened the email app, it was "gone" (moved to the very end of your email list on your phone because it sorts your mail to show newest first)

TBH, it reminded me of the observers in Fringe and their time travelling to meddle with past, present and future :D
 
Thanks for all the answers peeps. Would never have thought to Google. It never ceases to amaze me.

Having said that - obviously the far more feasible explanation is that I travelled back in time to mess with my mind.

Pfffft..
